    Long story short
Last year on 7/17/2015 we traded our sheep for a purebred registered oberhasli buck. We had the sheep up for $400, they said that they would sell him for $400 so we did a trade in stead. When they came they didn't bring his registration papers with them. We tried many times after that to get his papers but they won't give them to us unless we pay them $25.

The people we got him from are known for being Swindler's.

We want to get him registered before we leave for AK. I am not sure what to do about it. We would like to do as little business with them as possible.
How would guys get papers for him?

Sounds like this guy was trying to jerk you around. I really have to wonder if he was actually trying to sell this buck for $400 or if he made that up…

As far as the papers, did he say the papers were an additional $25 before you bought the buck? Do you all have it in text, email, or writing of him stating that $400 with papers?

Honestly, it really depends on how bad you want the papers. If y'all are not able to resolve this issue, I'd be tempted to pay the $25 for the papers.

Unless it's someone I personally know, I avoid buying goats unless the papers are in hand. Sometimes that means walking away and not getting the goat.

Was he registrable thru ADGA? Was the seller a member of ADGA?
This is from the ADGA rule book. This will only get you so far though…
XIX. RECOMMENDED TRADE PRACTICES FOR MEMBERS A. In the absence of a written agreement between the buyer and seller, it will be considered that any goat offered for sale is registered or recorded or eligible for registration or recordation. The registration or recordation papers will be furnished by the seller and transferred to the buyer at the expense of the buyer as soon as possible after the date of sale. B. The seller guarantees the fertility of the buck. A buck, after reaching 1 year of age, should be able to serve and settle a doe. The buyer is expected to provide reasonable care and feed. Should the buck prove to be a non-breeder, the buyer shall notify the seller within 60 days from the first time he was used for service, provided the animal was over 1 year of age at the time of service; and the buyer shall provide sufficient proof, such as a statement from a veterinarian, that said buck is sterile. The seller shall have the option of making a satisfactory exchange or refunding the money. In no case shall the seller be responsible for more than the selling price. The purchaser shall pay any shipping charges involved in the exchange. C. When a doe is brought to a buck for breeding and has not settled after the first breeding, the owner of the doe is entitled to one rebreeding in the same breeding season at no additional charge. 134 D. If the animal sold is a doe, there is no guarantee of fertility except where hermaphroditism becomes apparent when the animal reaches breeding age. E. A doe sold as “bred” is not guaranteed to be pregnant, but only to have normally accepted service from the buck. F. Complaints will not be processed by the Association unless the animal bore an individual identifying tattoo at the time of the transaction. G. Nothing in these trade practice rules shall be construed as abridging the right of the buyer and seller to enter into a private contract. In case of a complaint, if no written contract is presented as evidence, these trade practice rules shall govern.

Sorry you are going through this, how frustrating :he

We really do want his papers. They said that he would come with his papers without an additional $25:he. I was going to contact his wife and ask for the registration number and see if he is actually registered or if they want us to send them the $25 so they can get him registered.:hu His mom came from some of the best milkers as so did his dad.

It is really frustrating. Especially because we have had so much trouble already with them:somad.

OR .. does the registry allow ID chips? Boers did....

I suspect he isn't registered from the sounds of this. Wish you luck. NEVER take a registered animal without the proper papers unless you want it to be grade because that is what you have. Even fullblood background, this is true.-

The registry can tell you what is required. Some animal registries can call all livestock up by farm name for you.

While it is possible for him to have a microchip but it isn't very common in the dairy goat world.

Leader may or may not have been registered. It depends if the owner sent them in.

You can PM the name of the guy you got the buck from and I can run a search on him.

Name, farm name, etc. would be good. I can at least see if he is an ADGA member.

Yes, he should but is doesn't necessarily mean he has one. Many just put it on the paper work but don't actually tattoo. Or he could have been tattooed and it faded.

The buck I got from @OneFineAcre was the Nigerian I've gotten that was tattooed prior to pickup.
