So, will a doe that isn't in heat allow a buck to mount her? One of my does was bred this last weekend...several different times. Yet today I notice her vulva is looking swollen. I'm wondering if she's in heat today...which would mean she wasn't in heat last weekend. This is my first breeding season, so I'm new to this.

You could try her with the male again. I found that if my girls weren't in heat, they wouldn't let the males mount them. Even the first timers.

Good question that I will be keeping a watch for answers on. I have a doe that this is her second breeding season. I sent her to a breeder and was told their buck was on her constantly! They witnessed several breedings. Now we just brought another buck from the same breeder to our farm to breed a few more does and she was with the other does and he is all over her again!! The thing is there is no way she could be in heat now if she was in heat when the first breedings took place, the time won't allow it!! So, my guess is this girl is just standing for the breedings even though she isn't in heat. She is a bit passive and that is what I am chalking this experience up to. I don't see how she can't be bred already by the first breeding but if not for some reason well the other buck did his deed twice before we pulled her out of that pen!

She could be having short 5 - 7 day heat cycles. You should write down both dates. I have had does that settled on that second short cycle date.

Yep, I agree, sounds like a 5 day heat. I have several that settle on the second short cycle.

You may wanna try again. I agree with Karen..my girls will not allow the buck to mount if they are not in heat either. They run away and it becomes a chasing game. But not all does are the same. Some does will not show alot of phyical signs they are in heat..so it can make it difficult sometimes. Or she may just be a little timid and did'nt want to fight the buck away and he just got to her again..thats why she may be swollen? I would write this down...so you have a reference time frame anyway.

I would try to watch her closely and see if there are any other signs of heat...mine generally have fluid ooze a bit and a wet tail etc..so it makes it easier to tell. But behavoir can be a sign to...just watch her..thats the only thing I can suggest?

Good luck..Im sure others may have some more information as well...hope it works out for you!!
