Ridgetop - our place and how we muddle along

Sunday
I was pretty sick on Friday. Did a couple things of course, but really weak and tired. DS1 made me sit on the couch in front of the TV. He brought me coffee and an egg, turned on Death in Paradise reruns (funny British series about detectives in the Caribbean) and made me stay there. Later (after sleeping thrugh a couple episodes) I got up and wobbled down the hall to take a hot shower. Put on PJs and wobbled back to the couch. DS1 ordered e not to get on any ladders since my balance was all off due to the head congestion. That was OK, since I could barely get off the couch anyway. He brought me orange soda and kept checking on me. I dozed in and out - I know this because I missed parts of several episodes. LOL DH arrived in the evening. Not sure when since I may have been unconscious at the time. Later went to bed and slept well.

On Saturday both DH and DS1 ordered me to stay off the ladder. I was still shaky so ok with me. DH washed all the windows while DS1 unclogged the front drains outside. Then he and DH worked on the rear drains and got them opened. The front ones are draining slowly because DDIL2 took the covers off when they were covered with leaves and LEFT THEM OFF! Naturally the drain pipes filled with leaves and pine needles. DS1 got a lot of stuff out of them but not all even adding drain cleaner. They may need a RotoRooter guy but since they are draining we decided that was good enough for the inspector.

Since I was grounded under the "No Fly" order, I pottered around and moved all the packed boxes for TX into the MBR o try to empty the finished bedrooms. I sanded and stained the top of the boot box which will stay here in the house. It needs to be varnished but we found soe new cans of spray varnish and we will move the box out and just spray it. DH kept taking breaks to watch Fox news so I decided to scrub the kitchen cabinets. I couldn't stand them anymore. The bottom cabinets had food stuck to them from spills that that not been cleaned up! I removed all the handles when I scrubbed the cabinets. I scrubbed all day to get the cabinets clean. I had to use my putty knife carefully on a couple of the cabinet doors. I broke the "No Fly" rule and did the upper cabinets too. When they were finally clean I saw that some of the doors and drawer edges were worn so I rubbed them with stain to bring them back up. The handles on the cabinets and drawers used most had the finish rubbed partially off. DSIL had gotten me a can of rubbed bronze spray paint. I washed the handles in soapy water and spray painted them. When the cabinets and handes were dry last night I put them back on. The cabinets look very good now. The kitchen just needs the molding we put around the light fixtures caulked and the tile near the sink regrouted. I got all that nasty white sealant out of the grout last week so I need to clean the remaining grout, then mix and apply the right grout. Then the kitchen will be finished! Another room done!

I put several thin coats of mud on the MBA wall, and today will do the final sanding. No need for ladders. The patch is smooth. I need to prime, paint, install the new light fixture, and the MBA will be done. The front entry is still to paint, as are the 2 LR walls (That clinbing structure needs to come down!) but getting there. DS1 thinks he and DH might be able to get it off the wall by themselves. It took 3 men and a teenager to put it up, but taking it down might be simply a matter of not letting it fall off onto the hardwood floor. I will layer a lot of moving ades under it. Maybe bring out the twin mattress from the captain's bed too?

Rained all night and into this morning - hard. On Thursday the brush people will cut the brush out 200' from the house and barn. There will still be plenty for Rafi's sheep to eat and if he backs out the place will look ok to list. We still have to get the roll ff dumpter and hire some day laborers to toss the pole butts into it. Thank you so much DS2 for pulling them out - NOT! - and giving us this extra work and expense! :rant

This afternoon the kids are planning to celebrate DH's birthday. DS2 abd DDIL2 are planning a dual celebration of DH's 83rd and Alexander's 1st birthdays. It will be at DS2s house. I don't think I will go since I am not feeling that well, coughing and nose blowing, and the noise will give me a headache. DS1 went to Costco yesterday after dropping DH off at DD1's house to play games with the family. He picked up a couple BBQ chickens. I had some last night but my esophageal hernia wouldn't let me keep it down. Soup tonight for me. Chicken of course - generations of Jewish mothers can't be wrong! LOL

Time for coffee. I had to make it since DH couldn't find the can of coffee. Apparently opening all the cupboard doors until he found it was too hard.

It's no wonder that you're not feeling well with all the hard pushing you've been doing the last what 2 months ?? All that is a ton of work. Hope you're feeling better soon - and that you're headed back home to TX. Sounds like you're getting close to the end of the spruce up.

Allowed back on the short (3 step) ladder yesterday. Feeling a bit better so did the caulking on the kitchen light fixtures. DS1 stood below and handed me alternatively the caulking gun or damp paper towels. Then DS1 tried to change the GFCI in the kitchen and discovered that the newly purchased one was defective. He also tried to replace the microwave outlet. I was wrong, he had just plugged the MW in the existing outlet and it had worked for a couple days. This time he actually pulled the outlet and found the probem - a loose wire. He went to replace it with the new one and had bought the wrong outlet. At 2:00 pm they left for DH's birthday dinner, stopping at Lowes on the way to replace both plugs and the circuit breakers which DH said were not theright ones either. Apparently he needed "Square D" breakers. This am we have doctor appointments and after that DH and DS1 will work on the outlets and breakers.

After they left yesterday I made some crab salad for my supper, then assembled my supplies and painted the Master Bath. I had to take down the large mirror but left the light fixture up for now. Today he will take it dow so I can paint before putting up the new one. The wall heater patch does not even show! :) After painting I was drenched in sweat and wanted a shower BUT the bathroom was freshly painted and had to dry. I collapsed on the couch, ate my crab salad, and rested. Finally got my shower before bed last night. This morning I checked the paint for a second coat but it looks lie it only needs it in a couple places. I am not very pleased with the ivory color I used (left over from another room) but it saved me $40 on a gallon of paint so I don't care. It is neutral so good for sale.

Tomorrow we will tackle the climbing structure. DS1 said he has plenty of moving pads in boxes in the trailer to pad the floor but using the mattress on the floor will be less trouble. DS1 said he would come over yesterday to help remove the structure but did not show up. I didn't think he would because of hosting DH's and Alex's birthday dinner at 3:30.

Just two more painting projects inside and I can move on to the exterior where I noticed we need to do some stucco patch, and some siding eave repairs. Once the brush clearance is done on Thursday we can order out the roll off and start removing the large scale trash. We will only have it for a week (there is a time limit on the rental) so will have to be ready to go on that project. Also will have to plan a trip to hazardous waste with any other stuff. Old paint cans can be opened and filled with dirt then dumped in the trash cans whe solid, but some stuff can't be disposed of other than taking it to hazardous waste. There is a limit as to how much HW can be disposed of at one time so we may need to borrow a utility bill from DS2 if we have too much.

8111 is much worse. She has to be put down when DH gets home. I'd do it now but am not there so . . . . DH is so tenderhearted I am worried he won't be able to shoot her. If DSIL2 is in town I will tell DH to have him come out and do it. I'm not sure if DSIL2 can do it either but it's worth a try andhe has a handgun. She probably won't make it until I get back but don't like to think she is suffering. Best she go down asap. Sad but it happens.

LAUSD teachers are going on strike tomorrow. They have not had a pay raise in several years. The district offered them 2% - no annual raises for cost of living. LAUSD teachers are woefully underpaid compared to other states and districts. DD1 made more when she was teaching in Virginia years ago than she is making now. Considering the size of the district, the number of students the teachers are saddled with, the danger some students pose by attacking teachers, refusal by the district to discipline students, and the restrictions placed on the teachers by management, it's not surprising fewer persons are going into teaching. 5 years to retirement though so she will stick it out until then.

Got to get ready to leave for doctor appt.

All the rooms are finally painted. :weee I got up on the high ladder with DS1 handing me the paint brush and roller to do the upper cut in. I put the second coat on with him there as well but was able to use the extendable handle on the roller for part of the walls. I did the entry as well, and now just need to wash and paint the white woodwork trim in the entry. Hopefully washing the trim will be all some of it needs. :fl Some touchups will be needed in the master BR and the room where DS1 is sleeping. I also finished the exterior touchups on the front door.

The drywall tools are packed away now. Regrouting is done in the kitchen and bathroom. The new grout looks pretty light compared to the old grout but I can dye it darker with coffee. I used a grout cleaner that you spray on the tile and scrub with a brush. It sure made the grout look fresh and clean in the master bathroom. The ivory paint in the bathroom against the gray tile didn't look that good, but the shower curtain left behind by DDIL2 is colorful so I bought 2 coral bath towels and found a faux bonsai tree at Ross. Bathroom looks great now. The bonsai tree will go home with DS1 and the coral towels will blend in with my bathroom in TX.

The brush people spent 2 1/2 days clearing the brush. I think Margaret felt she under bid the job, but they did a good job. She added $500 for a tree that had come down and needed to be cut up and hauled off, but it was worth it.

DS1 worked on the screens and rescreened 4 frames. He had to buy a kit to make a new frame for the 5th one but he will get that one assembled tomorrow. Then he will wash the windows again with the spray on stuff attached to the hose and we will install the screens back on the windows. He also changed out a couple more outlets in the living room.

We plan to move the rest of the stuff in the house out to the connex so it will be ready to load in the trailer. There are more jobs to be done outside by DS1, and we have to wash the floors inside but after the trim gets painted we are pretty much done.

DH ad DD2 tagged the new lambs today. They did it on the phone with a video call and DS1 talked them through it. I was painting the entry but could hear him laughing hysterically at them. Apparently they complained the tagger wasn't working since the tags wouldn't go in the ears. He had them point the phone at the tagger and they had the tag in backwards! DH loaded the tag backwards several more times but eventually they got all 9 new lambs tagged. DD2 was thrilled because she did the tagging herself! That's my darling girl! DS1 checked that they wrote the numbers down properly and had them show him that they put the paper on the fridge. LOL I will have DH read it off to me later and write the numbers down on my list of ewes. 6 ewes have delivered a total of 9 lambs, most of them rams.

Took my shower and now I will go fold laundry and crash in frnt of the TV.
