I've never had to cut a scur before but it's starting to curl and go into my buck's skin. What tool do you recommend for trimming? And also, I have a milk stand, would that be the best way to keep him contained while doing this? How far do I trim?
He's a very friendly guy but of course he's in rut right now. I haven't been going within ten feet of him unless I want to smell like goat all day! Now I'm going to have to touch him :barnie

Wire horn saw...dremmel...hacksaw... There are many ways to do it.

What I'd probably do is shine a flashlight behind the horn and see if you can tell if/where there's blood in it and cut beyond that. If not, I'd probably take off whatever gets it out of the skin first, then take off more and more sections until you're either comfortable with where it's at or it starts to seep a little.

I used a hoof nipper (made for horses) when I had to cut a scur, I only took the offending end off. But...depending on how thin the scur is sometimes they will pop right off if you put enough pressure on them (push on it from back to front). The bleeding I find is less and will stop on it's own. I found this out by accident when using the nippers and the goat swung his head and the whole thing popped off. Popping them off works a heck of alot easier for my buck who has small scurs. I only have to "pop" his off twice a yr, spring/fall. I banded a little wether (with castrating bands) that I took in and his haven't grown back, did his in the spring.

Thanks for the reply. His scurs are pretty thick, he actually knocked the other one off himself last spring and bled pretty good. His whole head and neck were red and we had to get it cauterized. I'm not sure I want to do that again. I think I'll try clipping it at the end with shears and see if that works.
