I went down to the little store today for the first time. I was still half way across the parking lot when I saw the pictures. I knew EXACTLY what it was.

:somad :somad Yes, I should have killed the dog. I regret not doing so every time I think about it but hey it got the dog off the chicken, right??!

I took it and left a ruturn note in its place. I will be hanging this on my fridge!

Dear Irresponsible Dog Owner,

If your dogs weren't running loose killing chickens it wouldn't have been shot. I called animal control immidiatly and reported it.
Love, Casey.

Ps- You're lucky I didn't kill your dog!

(edited to add: I'm pretty sure I put killing chickens, not chasing chickens.. cause the one that got shot was like half a second from chomping down on my chocolate egger hen.)

Good for you for shooting the dog to protect your livestock. Maybe that person will do a better job of keeping this and future dogs they own, on their own property. We have had to shoot at several dogs and killed one on our farm. People just don't understand that adorable, sweet little Rover isn't so adorable and sweet where livestock is concerned.

Haha, my camera thinks its tomorrow!

I went in the store after to buy some ice and told the kid working behind the counter I took the xray pics and replaced them with a note because I was the one that shot the dog. Haha the look of shock on his face. He was like You shot it?? Lol I told him I was protecting my animals.

Wow. I can't believe the gall some people have.
So I guess you were supposed to just let the dog have its way.
If you are a responsible, loving dog owner then your dog is at home where it belongs. If they had done their job then their dog would not have been shot. It is THEIR fault. Not yours.
They are lucky you were able to halt the chicken attack.

Good for you. Hopefully the money spent on the broken leg will make them think. Should have added to leave their address so you can send the bill for the dead chickens.

Hate to say it, but you DO NOT own up to shooting someone's dog. They will
often take legal action, and might be able to afford to bankrupt you with
nusiance legal actions. You also DO NOT want personal retaliation for hurting
their dog. Even if it IS THEIR FAULT, they will never admit it. In a lot of
places letting your dogs run loose is considered "a right" for dog owners.

Friend of mine shot a dog running and ripping up her pregnant ewes. Caused
a LOT of damage in fixing the holes, lambs lost. She reported the incident
to Sheriff and then got sued by the dog owners for grief and loss of dog. They
were VERY well off Lake People who could afford legal action. She was a
farmer who waited tables to make ends meet.

She EVENTUALLY did get proven right, but it cost a mint.

This is where the old SSS, shoot, shovel and SHUT UP about it comes into
play. Unless you want to go after them for damages, you don't want
to tell everyone you killed XX's dog. Just asking for trouble. Get the
Animal Control folks involved, try it legal first on the "dog running,
damaging livestock" laws first to get paid for damages. You ARE allowed
to protect your animals. Then invoke the SSS rule, and don't mention it again.

Maybe some target practice will improve your aim, so if you need to shoot
a dog again, you hit him square and remove the problem for good.

I am glad I live where people accept the fact dogs get shot.

If my dog was running on some one else's ground I would have to suck it up if they got shot. We've warned neighbores that dogmas coming over and the reinforced their yards and we've had neighbores shoot their own dogs for harassing other peoples livestock.

I don't know if I would own up either. Yuppies tend to think dogs have the right to others yards and animals.

Yeah. That's a tough one. I know I would have a hard time paying a lawyer to prove I'm right.
Some folks can be nasty too in retaliation. I sure hope no more comes of this for you.
