We stimulated our bees on the Solstice. Today's hive inspection found beautiful brood patterns, emerging brood, and TONS of pollen being brought in!

Very pleased today.

@Baymule

thanks!

Bees shut down and stop doing a lot when the days grow short. When the winter solstice arrives, the days start getting longer, therefore they start gathering resources to build up for the busy season. We can start to "stimulate" them by either open feeding or internally feeding them sugar syrup. This gives the bees a boost and helps us get a better build up of going into the next season.

It makes sense that the bees shut down in short days/colder weather. Feeding them makes sense too, in that it strengthens them so they can go back to "work". Thanks for the explanation.

Interesting. Do you feed patties at all? I have the 2nd patty in my hive. We have been unseasonably warm this winter, so on most days, they are still bringing in pollen as well.
