Not sure what you mean by special characters? You can click on the smiley face at the top of the posting box, that will make a lot of :):eek::\:frow appear and you can click on them to insert them into a post.

Lots of alt codes work too, like → (alt and 26) and ♪ ♫ (alt and 13 and 14).

Or do you mean something else?

Or, if you mean special text characters, like ©, ®, ¢, or even Ѻ, ֍,ᴪ, and ° they are available in large quantities in the character map function, found in Windows Accessories.
Select the ones you need, then select 'copy' and you will use ctrl/v to insert them into your text.
