I bought an oberhasli buckling. He's 7 weeks old now. I wanted a polled buckling because the breeder fell behind and didn't get the babies disbudded when she should have. The little buckling was a month old when we got him and didn't have any horn buds through the skin - he did have little nobby like things - under the skin though. Since the breeder said he was polled and there wasn't anything through the skin at that time (4 weeks old then) I assumed he was, indeed, polled. My nubian bucklings were all born with little buds already presenting, so by 4 weeks old I figured a buckling would definately have horns if he was going to. Now I'm not so sure. Those nobby things are getting bigger. Still nothing through the skin - but he rubs those little nobs on everything - particularly fond of rubbing them on my shoes in the morning. He's worn some hair off on one side - but again, still nothing through the skin. The other little buckling, now 4 weeks old and also polled has a very smooth head - no nobs.

I don't want to wait until it's too late if he really does have horns that need disbudding, perhaps he's a very late bloomer? And I don't want to fry his little brain trying to take out buds that aren't really there. If it's part of his skeletal structure I guess it would make sense that they'd be getting bigger - the rest of his head is getting bigger, after all. Anyone have polled goats that have nobbies under the skin?

I can post pictures tomorrow if someone wanted to take a guess at what I've got going.

My polled baby boy did that. My husband kept telling me from 4 weeks old that they were polled, and I didn't believe him till they were 8 weeks old because of those bumps. Especially since they were growing! He's 12 weeks old tomorrow and the eventually stopped growing.

If you shave his head so you can see, you will be able to tell easily.

If he doesn't have true horns by now, then he is polled. Some polled animals do get little growth horns that are no way near to being a horn but do pop up through the skin.
