I don't buy feed with sweeteners. We feed plain oats, cracked or rolled corn, to horses, cattle, sheep. They ALL eat it just fine plain. Chewing harder feed keeps jaw muscles fit, teeth hard and smoothed off.
Doing studies on how animals eat thru 4-H, the roughage of hay, grazing, grains, is good for the digestive systems, scratching it's way along. Soft pellets turn to mush pretty quick after needing very little chewing.
Why pay extra for sugar calories? Grazing animals don't find heavy sugar in feeds naturally, may lead to moldy feed. Molasses will pull water out of our humid air, into feeds, leading to mold problems. With my old horse, we tried some "name-brand feed" which contained a LOT of molasses. Horse actually never got any because each of the 3 bags were moldy when opened. New shipment too, the feed store told us.
We seldom have any of the species leave any feed in their tubs, even if it is plain grains. Animals range from young to elderly.
And if you think about it, grains ARE textured! Lots of very convincing advertising, tricky wording out there, which you have to compare to the "less expensive" methods of animal feeding. Decide if the "extras" are worth the cost you pay. Extra costs can reduce your profit margin greatly.
