Funny you bring up treats. We were outside working and DH remembered he was going to pick up gumdrops. Seem as how what we were doing and gumdrops were a long stretch I gave him a quizzical look. He said he had someone in that was telling him they give all their calves gumdrops for treats.

Gum drops?

Sometimes I pass out bread(shh, that's a secret)
In the summer, we break off low branches from the big maple tree!
In the fall, they love the corn husks and stalks!

Just like a man... giving the kids candy!
Apples for us... healthy treats! Teach them to bite them tho so they don't swallow them whole and choke.

Actually, it was a lady that told him they do it. Now, who started it at their place...............

Which leads one to wander further.....
If you got the BIG gumdrops, could you hide pills in them?
A spoonful of sugar, y'know

Cows are suckers for something sweet.

And while we are talking treats: don't toss the stale beer! Yes, I know no one ever has stale beer, but just in case you do, don't dump it. The yeast and grains in it are good for a cow's digestion. Share it with your cows.

Further wandering yet... how much beer would it take to get a grown cow drunk and what would she do? Gives a new meaning to cow-tipping.

Don't they give beer to beef cattle in Japan? That's what makes Kobe beef so expensive? I think I read that somewhere....I tried carrots too, figure I'd take one bucket out for all the animals, since obviously the horses love them, but the goats only like them chopped up, and the cows hated them! I'll try apples next!

I went on a farm call with a vet to pull an apple out of a choking cows throat!

Cows do love thier sweets!
Back when we were feeding bread, we would get goodies too! While one cow saw calving, I gave her a box of frosted jelly filled donuts! She was enjoying them so much, she didn't even know I pulled the calf out!
