Hi! We are in conroe, tx (north of houston). We have 5 acres, 2 kids, and want to build a closed system homestead as much as possible in order to provide healthy food for ourselves and others. I am a horse trainer, we have my horse and a mini donkey plus ducks, geese, and chickens. We love heirloom breeds and want to add pigs as well as possibly a sheep or two and a dairy cow eventually. Thanks for having us!

Welcome! We used to live in Livingston for 30+ years, moved to north of Tyler 3 years ago. My sister lives in Conroe, next to McDade park. What side of Conroe do you live on?

If you want a closed homestead, plant permaculture plantings such as fruit bearing trees, berries and nut trees. If you have any oak trees, those are food bearing trees for pigs and sheep. Acorns are just starting to fall and my sheep go nuts for them. In another month, the persimmons will start to fall and the sheep love those too. Think about how you would feed yourself and your family if a SHTF situation arose.

Plant a garden if you don't already. Save seed. Learn to can and dehydrate. Keep plenty of supplies on hand. In your area, you can have a garden 12 months out of the year.

Welcome KD!

We live in California, but my heart is in Texas! You will find many, many knowledgeable and helpful people here. To be honest with you, the people here have helped us succeed in our ranching and farming endeavors. We would have failed miserable in several ways without the knowledge and help we received here.

Enjoy!

:frow Hello from 1 hour north of @Baymule, near Winnsboro, TX. Bay and I have become great friends, since we both moved here in early 2015. Baymule is a wealth of information and she and her DH are lots of fun to visit with. @Latestarter is 45 minutes East of us, so Bay & her DH, as well as my DH & I all get together for great food & fellowship. Sometimes @goatgurl, up in West Arkansas (Arklahoma), and her sweet Sis come to join us, as well.

We've even been known to include a little farm tutorial in, for grins - we've done goat milking, disbudding, and castration. :D

We have ducks, geese, chickens, a turkey hen 2 LaMancha Dairy Goats, 2 LaMancha weather (castrated) kids, a sweet little Dowling and 2 awesome Maremma LGD's (livestock guardian dogs)

Its so nice to have you join us. Bay has given you some great advise. Don't hesitate to ask questions. And oh yes! Pictures, we love pictures! LOTS of pictures!! :)
