I managed to pick up an interesting dehorner used from a dairy. Normally I am against used, but it was inexpensive enough that if it didn't work, then not a huge loss. It is fueled by butane! All it needed as a good cleaning, since it hadn't been used in a while, and it fired up without trouble. Apparently these Vulkan Dehorners are made in Ireland. I could barely get any information on it, but found what I needed to take it apart for cleaning and troubleshooting. I won't be doing any goat disbudding (the tip is small enough for goats) without being mentored first, but a dehorner/disbudder seems like an important tool to have on hand!
I did test it out on a volunteer plank of wood. It took no time at all until the tip was hot and leaving a good scorch on the wood. Probably practicing on wood is a good way to get down the proper technique I read about for disbudding, before I am shown in person how it is done.
