Guess I should explain the risky business quip. I was not paying attention to where I was and suddenly the ram squabble was nearly on top of me. Thankfully Twister was paying attention and swerved. Junior stepped on my foot and looked vaguely apologetic.
In scrolling thru posts I’d like to express my appreciation for everyone’s advice and support. It’s not easy to keep stock. Especially for someone who started so late. THANK YOU ALL !!
I was a member here, reading past posts, studying all I could, for several years before I got my sheep. I’ve learned so much here! Let’s be real, Storey’s Guide to Sheep is a very broad summary without much detail. BYH is where I learned what to do and not do.
Current Racka pics. L to R.
All these lambs are first generation Painted Desert ewes crossed with a Racka ram. They are about seven months old.
First picture is Twister’s number one son. His mother is the spotted ewe behind him. Fleece is still pretty solid.
Next is a ewe lamb, Rackacoon whose black mask filled in. Her mother is blind Hazel a blackbelly. Her fleece is definitely patchier.
Number One Son’s other side, he decided to shed some of his fleece and grow some more. He’s a bit of a mess.
Twister with Number One.
Horn genetics are still there, I knew the fleece would be tenacious but I think it’s possible to get decent shedding in the third generation. Whether I’ll continue down that road depends on whether I can broaden my Racka gene pool and run two flocks.
