Hi, this is my first post on BYH. I usually stick to BYC message boards, but a goat wandered up to my MIL's house, she didnt have any place to put her so I have been keeping her in my chicken house at night, and letting her free range during the day.. I checked around and cant seem to find her owner.. We have fattened her up ALOT compaired to what she was when we found her, and she now comes up and lets us pet her (she was really scared of people at first, and very very thin, so I dont think anyone has taken care of her for awhile).. Anyhoo Im just trying to figure out what she is (Im sure she is mixed, but would just like an idea).. I have also been looking for a male goat so I can breed her, but I dont kow what kinda goat I should get (we have alot of pygmy goats around my area but I dont know if he would be big enough or not (she is about 2 1/2 - 3 ft tall)??...My MIL has had goats before and say's she is a young goat (maybe 1 to 2 yrs old? is that a good age to start breeding?) Learning as I go...Thanks for all the help... Happy Thanksgiving

Oberhasli/Nubian?

To be safe, weigh her, and breed her only if she is over 80 lbs.

I have one that looks just like her that is a kiko-spanish mix, though the ears are not quite the same and mine has wattles.

I will bet she is some kind of goat mutt with at least some nubian due to the ears and who knows what else. She is cute. She needs a buddy, goats don't like to be alone.

Ditto on Free's statement, if she is over 80 lbs she will be fine.

Thanks, great advise on the weight! I know she needs a buddy, thats why Im checking everywhere for another goat. When we first got her we made a pen next to the chicken house and she would just yell and yell, then finally I put her in with the chickens and she seems really happy around them (the cat is another story lol) So If I was to get her another buddy what breed should I look for (small, med, Lrg?) Thanks again...

She looks just like my doe same coloring and ears and she is an Alpine/Nubian cross. Built and looks more like Alpine but has airplane ears which the Nubian side bred into. Just my guess. At 1-2 years old she is ready to breed as far as age goes. Just make sure she is about 80lbs. Good luck.

Look for one about the same size. From her horns, your guess on age is probably correct. If you just want them for pets, get another doe or a wether. If you want to breed you will need a buck or find stud services. Bucks are stinky, nasty and aggressive, keep this in mind when you decide.

I would also say Alpine/Nubian, but I am no expert.

With regard to breeding yes check her weight, and certainly make sure she is in tip top condition first. If you have a vet maybe get her checked out health wise.

Breeding is not a good idea until she is in good health.

She is a wonderful looking goat :celebrate

ditto, to everyone else, nubian/alpine cross. once she's fatted up and has kids, she should give you awesome milk!! high producing from the alpine side, and cream (high fat content) from the nubian.

:love She is adorable!! :thumbsup

I would want to breed her to something like a smaller Nubian to get those ears back down...or (if they're at all common around you) a F3 or F4 Mini Nubian buck with a high % Nigerian. She looks pretty darn small.
