I have meat sheep (mutts), and they have 11 acres of land including 6 acres of forest to eat. They get 1 pound of soaked oats in the morning, free range grazing all day, and 1 pound of alfalfa meal with timothy grass and a bit of oats and cotton seed hulls in the evening. I was reading online (I know, risky business) about how sheep need roughage. I wondered if they had enough roughage in what I am already doing. Is alfalfa meal considered roughage? Or only alfalfa hay?

I also read that oak leaves and acorns are not good for them. Well, the 6 acres of forest are almost entirely oaks. They head straight for the trees with the fresh acorns on the ground, when I let them out to free range. What do you folks think about the sheep eating oak leaves and acorns? It's not like I am going to be able to stop them anyway.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I've had sheep for 10 years. They loved acorns and oak leaves, even brown leaves on the ground. Never had any ill effects. Not saying that it never happens, but I have not experienced any of the dire warnings about acorns and oak leaves. Plus, you give them a good diet. I am also in East Texas, between Crockett and Lufkin. I use round bales of grass hay, bahia and bermuda. They are out on the field all day, but have free access to the hay bale. I call them in at night, give a pellet feed and close them up in a night pen.

With the grazing all day and foraging in the forest, it sounds like your sheep are getting plenty of roughage. Post some pictures of your sheep!

I think you're doing great with what you're feeding. Mine go out to graze for a bit (I use my dogs to contain/place where they graze). They get alfalfa and free access to salt and mineral (I use Purina Sheep Mineral loose). Mine are also meat sheep (as are @Baymule 's). They are dorper/dorper cross / mutt -- probably similar to yours.
As for the acorns and oak leaves - I probably read exactly the same things you did and obsessed about the oaks - they provide shade (much needed in So Cal) -- I opted to leave them in (I hadn't found BYH at the time). And lo and behold my sheep are fine, they love the leaves and the acorns. Occasionally one will over do it and have diarrhea for a day or so and it clears up. My oaks may be different than yours (I have Live Oaks -- small holly like leaves and small long acorns), but I'm guessing Baymule's are the same as you're in that area.
I've read the same thing about avocado trees - took a bunch out and arranged fencing for my barn turn out paddock to avoid them. We put in a fenced pasture last year and there was a gorgeous big avocado tree - I left it in, and so far the sheep are fine.
Your free range grazing would give them roughage.

awesome, I knew you folks would provide the answers. Being new to all this, I want to take good care of them, of course. They are quite large for their age, so I assume they are getting enough nutrition and calories.
