My heifer just had a new calf on the 17th of this month (January 12) Should I be giving mom anything other than hay? Temps have been between -5 and 32 degrees F
Thats fantastic news -A heifer or bull calf ??? is the sire a beltie too ??? oh and some pics when you get chance.
To your question - If your hay is available at all times and of good quality then you will have no probs. We are strictly grass / hay fed and our Galloways do really well but we calve ours in March so just keep an eye on her condition. Your calf will be huge by the next Fall and we wean ours around 8 months old
What Royd said. She'll be reaching peak nutritional requirements in a couple months, but all the same keep an eye on her condition to see if she's losing any during the lactation. That hair will tend to hide her real body condition score, so the best way is to do it by feel, which is done by following this article.
