When to feed grains?

Real n00b question here:

I am still working on fencing, and plan on getting cattle by next spring (if not sooner). I will have plenty of grazing grass and bales of hay for everyday feeding, but when do you feed grain from a bag, and how much?

Depends on your style of management, what breed of cattle, how old, how your pastures are, what stage of life they're at, etc. Give us some more info!

Raising steers?
Beef production----Dairy?

What part of the world are you in?

Personally, other than a little creep feed after weaning, and some cubes/cake to keep them coming up to the working areas, I never feed grain except in winter--or what passes for winter here in East Texas, and then, only if it is cold, windy AND wet.

Finishing steers or home freezer beef tho, is a different story.

I tend to feed cracked corn to the group that I work with once a day during the spring/summer here, the during fall/winter 2x/day because they need the energy. Also they know that when we call them and they come, the herd will get a treat of corn for listening to us
