OK, my ND are due for their first follow up CD&T shot tomorrow. Where do I give it to them? I am assuming it is intramuscular so I need to pull back a little after inserting the needle to make sure I don't hit a vein, correct? I've given shots to horses but this is my first time with goats. I am going to use 22 or 25cc syringes so the needle will be nice and tiny. I am assuming I should put alcohol on the location before giving the shot as well, correct? I am rather nervous since they are so sweet and I don't know how wiggly they will be:(

I give mine sub-Q. Just under the skin and you can pull syringe back to make sure your not in a vein. I give the cdt at the side back of neck/shoulder in the extra skin there. Hard to explain the location. I do not put alcohol on the are I give it.

Here is a good site that shows where to give (you will see the two spots I give the cdt at) make sure to click and open the diagram larger and how to give shots to goats. It says that cdt and other vaccinations are better given sq if possible because there is less of a chance of it abscessing.

Here is another good site for info.....I have read that cdt to be effective and work properly it must be given sub q.

double check the bottle. i am thinking sub Q. this is given best just behind the front leg, kinda like the armpit. pull up the skin, insert needle just under skin and press plunger. be sure needle does not poke out the other side, or contents will go on the ground.(ask me how i know?)
if it is im, best to do a hind leg, they will move around and not get sore.
some do use alcohol, some don't. we don't. alcohol could be introduced along with vaccine, and not sure the skin is actually getting the full effect of the alcohol unless you clip the hair

Thanks. What does SubQ mean? Just under the skin? Do they generally jump around or do they not really notice?

yes sub Q is just under the skin. they usually do not even notice the shot being given, but if you straddle them facing the tail end, you can hold them pretty eaisily if you do not have help.

Yup, we give it in the armpit area too and use the 22g needles. Be aware, most will get a lump that can take weeks to subside....it's normal! We bred horses for years (and I still board some, plus my own) and a lump was ALWAYS a sign of a badly given shot, but it goats it's not. A good massage after you give the shot can reduce the swelling. We give the shots in the armpit to not be confused with potential CL abscesses.

You may want to use a 20 or 22 instead of a 25 ga. needle because it will take forever to get the meds out. :)
