I'm about to put up some hot wire along my existing fences and also make two pens of just hot wire. The lady I got my sheep from had electric high tensile wire. I don't wanna go that heavy duty, but I'm sure the goats will challenge it. Do you think a tape or nylon braided wire would work better or regular wire?

I just replaced all my wire tape with plain wire....the tape works well for horses, but goats are tougher!

Yeah...we wanted our pasture to look good, so we used the tape at first.

HAH. Our goats didn't mind it one bit. The wire keeps them in.

I like wire better. Tape works well for animals that have less determination than goats. Wire is much cheaper too.

I'll be the fly in the ointment here and say I actually prefer the electric polystrand stuff *way* better than wire for jobs like this. Not the tape, but the stuff that looks like baling twine -- but shocky.

I'm a hi-tensile guy for any serious electric fencing application, but if it's a temporary pen or I'm just re-inforcing some existing fence, the 'electratwine' (i just made that word up) stuff is just easier to work with than ye olde 17ga aluminum.. Plus, it can be re-used..

Just my two cents. :)

We use the plain wire too. Goats seem to respect it more then I expected them to.

I use hot wire to keep my horse in. Going to make a hotwire pen for my goats as soon as the heat breaks. I use both types of wire for my horse. Wire to get a good shock and white polystrand for visibility. Keep in mind the polystrand has very tiny wires to carry the electricity. The wire must touch skin to shock. Hair is an insulator so if the tiny wires don't touch skin it will not shock.
