Greetings all! I recently bought two pigs, which were being housed in a barn-like structure and given free run of rotated yards during the day. SO basically, they are only in their house during the night and sometimes during the afternoon if it gets too hot.

Well, one of the pigs was not growing and not eating and even after a visit from the vet, who treated him for worms, the little guy died. And now we only have one pig.

I am very good about throwing fresh bedding, usually wood shavings, over the whole floor of the house everyday, but now i am wondering if I should clean it all out, given the worm problem.

My question is: On a deep bedding system that receives fresh bedding daily, should we clean out all of the bedding after an incidence of worms, or is it sufficient just to cover the old manure with new bedding everyday, which seemingly should prevent the spread of worm eggs to the uninfected weaner?

Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Some Worm/parasite eggs can survive for years just waiting to be picked up by a host to restart their life cycle.

So, while you MAY get everyone of those eggs, and may never track one back into the barn in the future.......well....a good wormer program gives me some peace of mind.

Did your vet worm the surviving pig?

Good luck!
