The free rangers did a lot of work I didn’t appreciate.
My birds do a lot of bug, manure & dethatching work -- plus some garbage disposal duty. They can be messy tho. Overall, it's why I keep them, not the eggs. Hen & chicks are entertaining.

Dreary & overcast -- boooo! Windy, too. We need a break from the winds, ya can't pick stuff up fast enough. Why can't it blow in money not plastic bags?

OK - been down the rabbit hole trying to find the video of the chicken ranch/breeding/whatever set up. Hours combed through the history on the pc, searched all over youtube (damn why didn't I copy that link?). So a word description is the best I can come up with. He had many different breeds - a hoop coop for each breed. Nest boxes (can't remember along the side??). Looked like a deep litter set up? All super clean. Rows of these hoop coops. Of course perfectly aligned. Spacing between rows nice and wide. Coops were tall enough to walk in, can't remember how many panels for each on - but they were not huge like a big commercial set up. I can tell I'll be back down that rabbit hole again and again -grrrr yeah - not even saved in a bookmark.

I get the idea... and when we were in CT , when I was married, we had several chicken coops... with a walk in door, pens on both sides and doors for them to go out into outside runs where they could get out on the dirt and in the sun etc... Because of the hill behind the house, mine were all smaller, single coops with the runs out the front... and could go in from each side into a larger pen... so 2 per house.... worked for me. Then also had several smaller single pens... what I called setting hen houses... but they would house 2-6 of the black langshan bantams for breeding or raise 6-10 young birds up... separate out the males and females so the females could grow up "unmolested"... and the cockerels didn't have anything to fight over. Not in nice rows so much due to the uneven terrain... but you could look up the hill behind the house and see the different ones out in their runs. Each one had an outside panel of chicken wire so I could take it off and let them out loose to roam.

Surprise... putting it in my thread... but I just became the owner of a bunch of turkey poults... CHEAP
