Poor guy!
He is a big boy!
He is a big boy!
Good to hear it it's progressing.Day 2
I snapped a leash on Buford and brought him out of the holding pen, @Ridgetop got Ozel out of the Honeymoon Suite. Ridgetop and I had leashes on both dogs and we sat in chairs. Buford sniffed Ozel after a little bit, and turned away. He wanted to go back to work and play with Sheba. Buford growled just a little, I corrected him and told him that was no way to treat a lady. Both of us petted our dogs, talked softly to them and just relaxed awhile. Nothing.
Ridgetop's husband said that when Buford growled, he was looking at him, not Ozel. So for the evening visit, he stayed inside. Ridgetop and I got the dogs and sat with them with one chair between us to give the dogs some rom. Buford sniffed Ozel and turned away. Ridgetop said there are dogs that are not interested until the female is in standing heat. She and Eric have discussed this and decided that in Turkey where they originate, the shepherds must have selected for male dogs that didn't go all crazy at the first smell of a female being in heat. That would be 3 weeks of both dogs not working. That made sense to me because my own Great Pyrenees male laid at the gate where my female was on the other side of the fence, desperate to get to her, but held back by a very effective fence with hot wire. He was worthless for weeks.
Buford just looked at me, clearly saying, "what are we doing here, I wanna go back to my sheep." Ridgetop petted Ozel, and she stretched out in the grass, blissfully relaxed. Ridgetop stroked Ozel, she is an attention hound and loves attention. Buford approached Ozel 5 or 6 times, each time sniffing longer. Ozel raised her head up once, then flopped back down because Mom was petting her. We stayed out with them until it was getting dark and put them up. Ozel had been reluctant to get in the trailer and had to be lifted up in the trailer. This time she just hopped up all on her own so she is getting more comfortable with being here.
We called Eric and gave him a progress report. He was pleased and said they are getting to know one another. With 2 young dogs that neither one has ever been bred, it takes a little bit for them to figure it out. For them to "know" each other and be relaxed when together is a good thing.
