Advice for 6 YO ewe having issues

I’ve been mostly occupied taking care of our cat these last couple of days, but my husband has been an absolute champ taking care of the sheep in my figurative absence. Cowgirl is doing much better today. She’s still not quite back to her normal self in terms of her demeanor, but she’s mobile...

Advice for 6 YO ewe having issues

She was on her side when we found her but on fairly level ground. Not especially close to any fences or anything. But it’s possible! She was on her right side, and her left legs were kind of sticking straight out so maybe she couldn’t get them back under herself.

Advice for 6 YO ewe having issues

Good morning, all. I am… hanging on by a thread, but still hanging on. The cable on the garage door broke when we got home from the ER with the cat at 3AM so I guess it’s a good thing we have 2 cars. Kitty is doing alright, not out of the woods yet, FLUTD is a hell of a disease… There are 2...

Sorry for the late reply, I’m back at the ER with my cat right now 😞 ugh

Advice for 6 YO ewe having issues

No new weeds that I’ve noticed. I wondered about heat stroke too, but it barely hit 70 degrees today, so I figured it wasn’t likely. They have 3 shade structures. She did seem to appreciate shade and water though, she was SO thirsty, and I did wet her ears just in case. Weird that she didn’t...

Advice for 6 YO ewe having issues

Hello all! We have a Katahdin ewe who is approximately 6-7ish years old (we adopted her a little over a year ago and was told that was her approximate age). Today at 2 PM PST, we found her lying on her side, panting heavily, champing/gasping/chewing at the air, with a rectal prolapse and a pile...

They are lucky to have neighbors like you, who are kind, willing to teach, and patient! Yes, our lambs were raised with abundant kindness, and I am grateful to have been able to find someone who shared our values to help teach us the process and ensure their lives ended with that same...

    Processing our feelings about processing...

Well, yesterday was hard, but all things considered I think it went well. The man who came out to the farm to help was incredibly kind, and emphasized that a humane end was his priority. He answered all of my questions with patience, I said my thank yous and goodbyes to the lambs, and went...

Thank you, I think I am learning it will probably never be “easy,” but that it may get easier the more practice I get. Just like euthanizing animals when I was a vet tech, it never gets easier, but you learn how to process it and find a place to store it where it doesn’t hurt all the time. I...

    Processing our feelings about processing...

That’s terrible, I am so sorry you had that experience. Hopefully, since they are sheep, it will be slightly easier than a bull. I will definitely be talking with the butcher when he arrives, and I will do everything I can to make sure it’s done correctly. Luckily our “catch pen” stays up all...

    Processing our feelings about processing...

We’ll have the lambs in the catch pen (it’s about 10’ square) and I was gonna pen them up the night before so they have some time to settle. We are looking forward to the opportunity to share with friends and family, which I think will contribute to the good feelings afterward (we do have a...

I think you're right, I think there’s definitely part of me that believes I need to suffer in order to make the process more acceptable for some reason… Thank you for your perspective, it helps a lot.

    Processing our feelings about processing...

Thank you so much, I appreciate your perspective. That helps alleviate some of my guilt. I will keep my own limitations in mind and give myself grace, it’s true I have done all I can do to give them a good life until this point. That really helps, thank you <3 I think that will make things...

I love the idea of creating a sort of ceremony around the process. That’s very sweet. Thank you for your input, I really appreciate you sharing that. Cheers 🍺

    Processing our feelings about processing...

We are having our first lambs processed next week, and I was hoping some more experienced folks could share how things went their first time so I feel less alone in my feelings and maybe better prepared… We adopted 3 ewes whose owner had passed away, and 2 came to us pregnant (a Katahdin and an...
