Why are the goats always in the shed???

I guess I'll move all the water out during the day. Can't move out the hay because it has to stay inside during the rainy days. Maybe I'll string up a tarp over one corner of their pen...goats are odd!

Why are the goats always in the shed???

We have 3 milkers in one shed. We close them in at night for predator safety but in the daytime the shed door is open to a pen. Even when the day is nice they are always in the shed! It gets so dirty so fast since where they stand they pee. Why are they in their house even when it's nice out...

    housing question

Do you not have predators? Or do you keep a LGD in there? We close in all our animals at night so the coyotes and mountain lions don't eat them...

Nubian cross too young to kid?

I don't even breed my Nubian does until 70#, so no this is not ideal. But since you are unsure if she truly is prego I would try testing either sending in blood or by ultrasound if you have that available. Then you can decide how nervous to get! I have heard of does getting bred by their own...

Babies soon? Pic included.. May be graphic

So as for the ligaments...there are two pencil sized "rubber bands" running from the tailhead to pelvis. In order to feel them put your thumb on one side of the tailhead and first finger on the other like a C. In big Nubian does its about an inch on either side of the spine, but in little ones...

    Strange Udder

She has kidded and milked normally before, just didn't take this year. Since I milked her out she hasn't refilled so I guess she'll be ok...

    Strange Udder

So one of my does was due towards the beginning of July. Her udder started to grow a small bit a few months ago, but then never filled all the way. Turns out she wasn't pregnant. Her due date is well passed now and she never got round. No big deal, we'll breed her in the fall. Weird thing though...

    California

Just moved back to CA, living south of Monterey in an area called Big Sur. We have Nubian goats, chickens and ducks. Trying to get everyone settled in...lots to do and build! Wondering if anyone in the area has a good lead on hay. Found the feed store, but we'll go broke on their prices! Glad to...

Article on Drying off a Goat?

I have always cut back on grain to drop production and then tapered off. Drop to once a day, every other, etc...no mastitis yet! It's more natural, kids start eating more solids and drinking less until the does production slows to not much. That's how I was taught.

    Cougars

Currently my plan is normal welded wire 5' fence with hot wire along the top for the daytime. They will have wooden sheds to be shut into at night. The question is having a more secure area to put them in if we decide to go out in the eve, but it's too early to go to bed. My current setup has a...

    Cougars

So other than eating them all ;) how should you lion proof goat/sheep? Would a covered chainlink dog run do it? Or you'd need electric on top of that? We are moving into a new place where they have mt lion...we have a 2 dog limit (rental) so no option of LGD...

Difficult kidding... Now not much milk... Why?

My friend's Nubian doe went into labor early. She has been huge and already bagged up well ahead. This is her second time, but they bought her just after freshening, without her kids last year. She has a horrible shaped udder but was easy to milk, so they bred her. So she was laying down...

Is there a gender you are more appted to get??

In mammals the sex of offspring is determined by the male...some bucks make more female or male sperms...however the environment they get put into can change who makes it to the egg...male sperm are faster swimmers, but it means they use up energy quickly...female sperm swim slow and steady...
