I think they were hatched either the last few days of September or the first few days of October
I brooded 3 day old chicks outside in below freezing weather, but with a MHP (momma heating pad) instead of a heating lamp. You need a heating pad without auto-shutoff. Mine was a Sunbeam, I think, bought from Amaz0n.

If you're interested I can link you to my build.

No mamas. I bought them as day old chicks, picked them up on day 3 from the breeder.

The brooder was a dog crate, covered in hardware cloth. There's a heating pad attached to a frame underneath the red/maroon pillowcase, the chicks went under it to get warm. Temperature outside dropped into the mid 20s, but the chicks were fine. The cardboard was to protect them from drafts.

This photo is actually from about two weeks after I brought them home.

The calves we just weaned: Nugget, Snuzzles and Tic Tac are much friendlier. The least friendly calf is Snuzzles. This morning I was standing outside the gate and I was just talking to the calves and Tic Tac came up to the fence and licked my hand. The friendliest calf is Nugget I can pet her face and go all the way to her shoulder before she backs away. Before weaning Nugget was the calf that I couldn't even get within 6 feet of her without her running away and now she is the only one I can pet. Tic Tac will lick me but I can't pet her and Snuzzles won't go near me but I am very happy Nugget is friendlier because we are keeping her and selling Snuzzles and we are trading Tic Tac for a steer calf that we are going to sell.

It is always my job to feed the weaned calves and when I feed them I will talk to them so they get used to my voice and I will pet them to get them used to that. I was petting & talking to Nugget last night and when I came in my brother asked what I was doing outside and I said I was petting Nugget and he doesn't believe that I can pet her because she was so wild before weaning
