Unbred doe with half udder full, blood

Two days ago I noticed my unbred 3 year old Nigerian doe's bag looked a little large - but she ran away from me and I couldn't catch her. Today I grabbed her collar while eating grain - half the udder is full and when I squeezed blood came out. I have her mother and another nigerian, I haven't...

CTChick - Farmette in the 'burbs

Cricket had a thick white discharge yesterday, a bit gooey today ... I can't figure out the ligament thing for the life of me but I have Bridget (who is not pregnant) they not sisters but both from the same "batch" of kids - so I can compare girth and spine/profile. Now, let's see ... temps in...

Well, I am embarrassed not to have posted in so long - but I think you'll understand in that after we went though Storm Sandy - I live one town away from Newtown, the Sandy Hook shootings were a nightmare you cannot imagine ... and yes, I knew one of the children (Jesse Lewis) his mom and dad...

Looking to Buy Horseshoe Nail Rings

Thank you - my husband is a welder, perhaps he can make them for me ... a patron of my shop was asking about them, I have seen them offered at Renn Faires a long time ago but apparently they are very hard to locate!

Looking to Buy Horseshoe Nail Rings

Does anyone know a farrier who makes simple, genuine horseshoe nail rings that are wearable? I would be interested in purchasing these for my shop. Please email me at lenhard@comcast.net if you have any information. Thank you and Happy New Year! Laura (CTChick)

I tried this on my own ... when I click the link to backyardchickens (to which I also belong) it tells me there is a problem ... this did seem like it should be easy, too (sigh).

Well, I fell asleep in front of the TV (hoping to watch Obama's acceptance speech) and now I'm up and wide awake. Can't believe I didn't post about Storm Sandy! Our only barnyard issue was one chicken coop tipped, but didn't fall over ... we propped it up, chickens were okay. So grateful for...

Quick note: Tired of a loud, aggressive (albeit handsome) silkie - he went back earlier this week, and good riddance!

    feeders at our farm

Thank you for these pictures - for folks like me who are new to goats, this type of information is invaluable! New people NEED to see pictures!!! Especially those of us who started out as "city folks!"

Was buying feed at Benedicts and ended up with a new rooster (smart, really - with a storm coming in!) but he is a gorgeous white silkie boy and I couldn't resist. I keep two roosters in each coop/run and lost my frizzle cochin ("Fabio") a couple weeks ago. He was old, and just fell asleep in...

    Bridgemoof--Sheep & Wool festival

The pigs are adorable! Funny though, with all the pets and animals I've kept pigs have never tempted me ... we are also battened down up here in Connecticut, spent the day working and preparing for storm Sandy (aka "Frankenstorm"). I am more worried about the Louisiana sinkhole - now THAT has...

I have been checking sites, looking at ideas for homemade hay feeders. The man who built my goat shed was supposed to add a wooden rack, I guess he forgot and I didn't thiink to ask. I have all sorts of options, hay bags and hangers and racks - height is a challenge with two nigerians and one...

    Bridgemoof--Sheep & Wool festival

Thank you for that - your story honestly brought tears to my eyes. I love to hear about happy marriages, I have seen so vey few of them in my life (sadly). Can I ask one more question, then we'll keep it strictly barnyard? How old was your husband when he quit drinking, and how old when he...

    Bridgemoof--Sheep & Wool festival

Just spent almost an hour reading your entire journal ... wow. That's all I can say - wow. I thought I was busy! I have four kids (ages 8-19 all active in sports) a shop I have owned for the past 5 years (www.talismanct.com) plus my farmettee and I am a writer ... I've owned a total of four...

I got my goats piecemeal: Cricket and Bridget are registered, show-quality Nigerian Dwarfs from a friend's farm. the come from 4-star miling lines. My son had been working there, and back in April she had two orphans (actually mother just didn't want them) I offered to bottle raise and RETURN...

    Fabulous Goat playground

Overworked husbands, indeed. The minute I finished watching this, I turned to Roy and said, "Where can we get a BUNCH of these spools? I want this!" Funny ... there was a time I felt that way about shoes ...

    Goat acting off, fell over.

I dealt with this a few months ago ... polio. First doeling was stiff legged, very quickly walking in circles and within 24 hours was blind. I was at vet within 24 hours, vitamiin B/thiamine shots twice a day for 12 days. You must get her to eat and NO MORE SWEET FEED (Meatmaker) for us...

Hi! I love this site, found it through Backyard Chickens - chicks came first a few years ago, this spring I dove into goats. I've been posting here and there, wonderful advice provided and lots of fun. Here's my journal: I guess I'll start with the questions suggested and add as I go. Laura...
