Where have you been for so long? Did you move to BYC? I might have to check in over there more often. I might even have to get some more chickens.
I spend more time lurking and learning on byc than posting anything. As for large animals I have only water buffaloes and no seems to have them in here . Though I find many videos and shorts about them originating from US.

I even learned a poem
'everyone got a water buffalo
Mine is fast and yours is slow '

It is kinda funny

I remember reading about water buffaloes in The Jungle Book. Mowgli is living in the village, and is assigned herding duties.

From the chapter "Tiger! Tiger!"

Kipling was born in India but as child was sent back to England when his parents once heard him speaking Hindi (I hate British people) . He must have later on read about water buffaloes somewhere because what he is describing is clearly a swamp buffalo 'slaty blue' color, 'backward sweeping long horns', 'savage red eyes' etc are all characteristics of swamp buffaloes that are found in Thailand, China and other East and South East Asian countries.

South Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries have river buffaloes they usually black, sometimes brown or blond, they sometimes have white socks. Their eyes are brown cattle eyes or sometimes blue , in some breeds of the eyes are not blue then the animal is disqualified. Their horn are either curly or sickle saved and develop backward then upwards . They are generally shorter than the horns of swamp buffaloes.[/url]

Thank you! That was interesting, informative.

I did a term paper on Kipling in 8th grade. I recall children were often sent to "public" school at a very early age. Rudyard was no exception.

Herders often stayed close to their buffaloes when grazing in jungle, because buffaloes tend to get attached to their owners much more strongly than cattles do. It was because Indian jungles were infested with tigers, leopards, wolves, jackles and heynas (still are). And buffaloes actually saved their herders,

It may sound like anecdotal, but it was proven beyond all reasonable doubts when herds of buffaloes saved their owners from a tiger attacks in North India in past few years. Unfortunately all of them were disabled , but hey they are still alive. Such incidents are becoming more common as India's tiger population is growing.

Check out the link to the chapter "Tiger! Tiger!" in which the protection of the herder is mentioned.
