Did you ever have a goat that you guessed would be a horrible mother and she prove you wrong?

I have a lamancha that runs over a nigi wether without hesitation and has rammed a 2 day old kid into the barn wall. I think she will be an awful momma. Please tell me I'm wrong and that her instincts will kick in....

One of my ND is a head-butter (not with people - just other goats). She has been known to butt very small kids and she stresses me out sometimes when all the girls are pregnant, because she's been known to ram into other does' sides at the feeding trough. Also, although our barn cats aren't afraid of goats in general, they steer clear of her.

All that said, she is an excellent mama - honestly one of the most attentive, affectionate does with her kids. She is nothing but sweet to them. You never know what kind of mom a doe will be until you see it first hand.

Best of luck. Maybe there is a super mommy locked up in your stinker of a goat! :fl

I've never seen any connection between how a goat acts towards other goats, or other goats babies and how she acts to her own.

Lol, I guess only time will tell.

I know there are goats who will drop their babies in a field and have nothing else to do with them. I sincerely hope my lamancha is not one of those.

X2! Well put!

We have some moms that are real relaxed others overprotective others that like anyone's kids and others that think gee when will I be done with this? Good moms all of them.

The goats that drop thier kids and leave are few and far between and many times those kids are born dead or something else is just wrong and the dam senses that. I have one doe that only liked one kid of her two, (she did this to me twice) but she also had hours and hours between kids being born and I think that was part of the problem. Most goats are great moms and I agree with @OneFineAcre, no correlation between behavior in the barn and being a good mom.

She will probably be a great mom. My Bluebell hates other goats' kids but we had a weak kid that we left on her for several weeks (we normally pull and bottle feed), and she was fabulous.

I have a bully, she almost was named crockpot as I wasn't going to deal with that forever, then she got pregnant and she turned much nicer, we bottle our kids so didn't think about her being a good mother or not, then our Boer had kids, they are all in the same pasture and another doe I decided to let raise her single kid, well, the bully has become the babysitter and if any other goat goes close to those babies who is not the mom, Flash runs them off! I know, does not really apply but I thought it was a cute story. I bet yours will be a great Mother.
