Okay, my herd queen who is usually healthy as a horse kidded 6 days ago. Today, she had a clumpy poop and within 2 hours, she was down with copious bloody diarrhea. laying down while she pooped - NOT normal. Temp is 104.5. She wouldn't eat or drink anything, so. . .

drenched her with Molly's Herbal Wormer #1
gave probios (figuring it couldn't hurt?)
thinking we may be looking at Enterotoxemia, gave 8 cc penicillin IM
30 cc pepto bismol
drenching with a pint of electrolyte water once an hour or two.

She appears to be (possibly) getting a little better. She fights the drenching and the shot, so I take that as a good sign.

So far, her triplets seem content and sleepy, but I am worried she may not nurse them when they need it. I don't have any goat milk stored, but I do have one other doe in milk, so I could bottle feed them if need be.

She has not been vaccinated. I tried to get C&D antitoxin, but store was out of it. It was late so I couldn't get to a second store before closing time, but I can try again tomorrow.

Any other suggestions? Do you think a pint of electrolyte water every two hours is enough? She hates it, but I can torture her further if needed. I read you can give fluids SQ. At what point would you resort to this method?

Also, I wanted to give Sulfadimethoxin (in case I'm looking at coccidosis), but I couldn't find it. Where do you get it?

Thanks for your help in advance. This is our favorite doe; I hope she recovers. If not, at least two of the triplets are does.

I would try and get the C&D Antitoxin. You can get Sulmet or Corid at TSC if you need to get it quickly for coccidia. You would have to order DiMethox online and that would take a few days. I would also worry about calcium. So you may want to give her some CMPK too. I would do a full 7 days of the Penicillin. If you can get some Banamine, I would give her some Banamine or give her some aspirin (not sure on dose of aspirin).

Thanks, I did find the DiMethox this morning at our coop, so gave that too. So far, have tries 3 stores (co-op and 2 TSCs) for the antitoxin. None even carry the antitoxin. TSC is supposed to carry the actual vaccine (antitoxoid), but they are out of it.

I don't have banamine, but I'll try to figure out a reasonable dosage for aspirin - that is a good idea. Thanks.

Maybe I'll see if I can order the antitoxin and ship ASAP.

The good news is that this morning she did nurse her babies and the babies are peeing, so they seem hydrated. She still isn't drinking, but we keep drenching her. She continues to have watery diarrhea, ugh.

I would consider doing Scour Guard for pigs or Neomycin for bacterial scours along with the sulfa-dimethoxine and penn G shots. I would give the Penn G shots every 8 hours as long as she is really sick. I would treat with everything, every 8 hours. until the diarrhea lets up

I would also get ready to give her lots of probiotics and injectable B vitamines.

I would be careful about too much electolytes,

Try putting a salt block in her pen with her, next to her water. I have had good luck with that getting them to drink. Any salt block will work for livestock, the goal just being to get her to stand and lick and drink.

If she isn't eating, she need calories.

You can get propalyne glycol and drench her with that, mix in amino acids with it

You can mix together, corn syrup, corn oil and mollasses, 1 part each to make 6 t0 8 ounces, and add water and drench her with that. every few hours.

You can thin some yogurt(not light), mix in an egg or two, and any of the above ingredients to it and drench.

I have also read where cream corn works great for drenching,

or just mashing up alfalfa cubes and soaking them and mixing into a slurry with any of the above ingredients.

At this point you really should consider bottle feeding the kids, her system doesn't need the extra stress of nursing on top of severe scouring.

Strangely, she is eating. We're only giving her grass or hay. No grain, no legumes. When the kids nurse, she is burping up cud and chewing.

I'll pick up some scour guard though, thanks. I have probios and vits.

I'm confused about the oil drench. I've read that elsewhere, but I thought you took oil to induce diarrhea, not the opposite. Am I just confused?

Luckily, she's chubby. I hate to see her stressed, but she'll still be okay if she loses a couple pounds, as long as she gets healthy again, of course.

Thanks for your time and help, 20kids!

the corn oil is digestable and gives them calories if they aren't eating, you have to give them a lot of it to cause them to scour. Corn syrup will make them scour, their system can't live on just electrolytes, so that is a good recipee if they are off feed to keep giving them some energy.

Okay, thanks.

Having taken castor oil myself to induce labor (it worked! it was gross too!) I just wondered about that part.

GOOD NEWS! Janis seems to have turned the corner today. She is eating grass, drinking (YAY!), walking more comfortably and bossing around her herdmates as usual. Her behind is (finally!) dry, although very messy :sick

So. . . I got the swine meds for scours, but never used it. I'll just keep it on hand. I'm going to finish out the course of penicillin and SulfaDimeth. . . and finish the last dose of her herbal wormer. I stopped the drenching water and the pepto.

I was not able to track down C&D antitoxin either locally or to be shipped overnight (or even in a few days). However, that is one item I will now keep on hand!

Now, I just pray that I am not back on here soon saying Janis is worse again OR that another doe is down. :fl

Thanks again for the help!

Keep a close eye on the kids, since they've been nursing in close proximity to the 'messy end', they're likely to pick it up from mom.

If they scour, I'd treat them ASAP w/ the scour guard.

Good luck!
