Love having all the sheep, but the alfalfa bill not a happy thing. It's keep all and go broke, or keep some and tolerate the feed bill.
Solution: Move to east Texas!
I carried the newborn to the gate, one ewe acted interested so I let her in. Her behind showed the evidence. Negligent mom, charged with abandonment and starving a baby. Sentence, 7 days in jail.
Tough judge. Need more of them. LOL
I tied a chain link gate to the hog panels with my old friend, hay string.
I LOVE haystrings!

Still waiting for the Granny exposion. She is so big it may take out tree or two.

Granny. Oh Granny!

Took Buford to Houston today to meet a beautiful girl. Eric wanted him collected, then inject the semen in the female. It’s supposed to result in more puppies than a natural breeding. I’ll post details on Buford’s journal.

So, long day, coming home, stopped in driveway to put Buford in his field. Then I got Sheba out of the front field, to join him. Made them happy.

I saw Granny with what looked to be a purple tongue hanging out and the tip of a hoof. I went in the house, changed clothes, grabbed a towel, halter, rope, long gloves and went back outside. Granny ran from me. Stupid sheep! I’m trying to help you!! Couldn’t catch her. Got feed, dumped it in troughs for the ewes, they ran to be first, Granny included. I got the rope around her neck, dragged her to a solid gate post, put the halter on and tied her up close.

I popped the head out, only one foot, couldn’t find the other leg. I pulled on the one leg, pulled on the head, did another search for the other leg to no avail. I reached in, grabbed around the body and pulled while pulling on the one leg. I pulled on the head, pulled on the leg. An eye fluttered. It was alive! Granny pushed and roared loudly. I got the leg out up to the elbow. I pulled some more and finally the lamb came out.

The second one presented the same way, one leg forward, couldn’t find the other leg. But this lamb was smaller. Big, just not as big as the first one. I loosened up the rope, put the babies up close to her.

I evacuated a jug. I put the babies in it, went back for Granny. I walked (dragged) her to the pen and put her in it. The first born was collapsed in a heap. The second born was up and lively. I fed the other sheep, fed the dogs, went back to check on Granny. Second born was up and sucking. First born was still in a heap. I know I injured that poor baby and I felt bad, but it was either that or death.

Granny hated her. She did this last year, utterly rejected the ram lamb, doted lovingly on the ewe lamb. I fought her for hours trying to get her to feed her baby. So I didn’t waste my time trying to get Granny to accept the first born. I wound up bringing that lamb in the house and fed her colostrum. I fed Tinkerbelle. She looked so small next to that huge lamb.

Neighbors Catherine and Sarah invited me to supper at 7. I gratefully accepted. I came home stepped on the bathroom scale, held the big lamb and she weighs 10 pounds. She has black around her eyes, son dubbed her Mabelline, after the make up company.

I ate supper, enjoyed their company, and came home to feed the girls again. Mabelline has what looks like bottlejaw from me pulling on her. Poor thing.

No rest for the weary. Lambs woke me up at 2, I finally got up at 3, fixed bottles and fed the two piranhas. I diapered them, cleaned the tray in the dog crate with Clorox spray and put down new potty pads. Mabelline is asleep in my lap, head on my chest. I’m rocking her and stroking her. Tinkerbelle went on a search and destroy before settling down and falling asleep at my feet. I desperately need another cup of coffee but that would wake the babies. After what poor Mabelline went through, I’ll just sit here, holding and rocking her.
