Yesterday was a no work day. I went to visit mu sister in law, asking her to go to lunch. She declined. I left her house, headed to town. Four GOATS jumped out of the woods right in front of me! SCREECH!!!! Brakes squealed while i looked in the rear view to make sure some speeding truck wasn't going to ram me from behind, missed the goats and WHEW!!! I went to the house whose yard they ran back to. Nobody home. So I left a sticky note on the door. Your goats were out in the road, I almost hit them.

I went to Lufkin to a restaurant that has all you can eat shrimp on Wednesdays. I ate all I could and a few more. Picked up some dog food and cat food for SIL and took it to her. Went home, took a nap.

Yesterday I set 2 hay bales. To set the bale in front field for @Margali ’s sheep, took off the half hog panel for access. I used my little tractor front end bucket to rake out the bottom of the bale, “old hay” . Then I brought a bale using son’s 100 HP Kubota. My sheep can munch on Margali’s sheep bale, so I stood up 2 pallets to limit their access.

Then I went to the middle field, took down the hog panel that is part of the working chute. I took off the half hog panel across the bale area that keeps them from climbing in and pooping all over their hay. Terrible table manners! I used my little tractor to scrape out the old hay remnants. Used son’s tractor to set a new bale and put it all back together again.

Then I turned my attention to the bale I set in the front field night pen for my sheep. Out of cow panels and didn’t want to go buy another one. So I rigged up a tarp cover, driving T-posts to secure it to. No rain on 3 months, ground is like concrete. It took 60+ whacks with the heavy home made driver that I like. I can’t help it that I’m 70 now and my arm muscles grow down instead of up.

Uh-oh, bad grommet on a corner.

I tied a knot in that corner and on the other corner and tied them to T-posts. So I kinda have a craptastic cover over the bale, not great but will keep the worst of the rain off, if any ever shows up. Maybe.

They can snack on the hay from the field side too.

That took most of the morning. SIL needed cigarettes so I went to Apple Springs, “town” ant got her 2 packs, took them to her. Then went to nephews house where a bodacious elder berry TREE is growing through his round baler. I had permission to take all I wanted. I wanted to dig up the roots but they were under the baler and I couldn’t get to them. Couldn’t reach the tall part growing out the top, so I cut off all the growth on the side. I stopped at a neighbor’s and gave her a good start of cuttings. Came home and stuck mine in a bucket. I invited her for supper, we had chicken wings, butternut squash, homemade cream corn and lemon pie.

Love all of the pictures and the explanation of what you're doing. You got a lot done yesterday.

I love reading about your ranch solutions, even if they're "craptastic".

My first elderberry is from a friend's cutting, planted in the Spring. It's now over 6' tall.

I got so many cuttings off that one plant. I can plant a forest! Plus I'm giving a bunch to a friend, along with wild grape cuttings and I'm gonna cut up a bunch of those wild black berry canes for him. He wants "wild" varieties over the tame ones, they are hardier.

You probably already do this.... but after several failed attempts to tarp Eva's hay & learned that I don't trust grommets.
I go in about 6" from the corner & make several tight wraps around the corner of the tarp. The tip of the corner can't pull through the wraps & the only way it can come loose is if the entire corner of the tarp rips away. We RARELY get winds like that here.
