Baymule’s Journal

One of the reasons I am getting bison and have gotten ducks. Unlike cows and chickens, they are more hardy.
Bison are known to carry brucellosis. They may be hardy, but can also get trich. The buffalo herd in Yellowstone park carry brucellosis. Are bison tested for diseases like cattle before buying?

It's a toss up on vaccination, though it's funny that it was actually the cows that gave it to the bison and now they are giving it back. Now anyone having bison are viewed as the evil one.

One reason I do Bangs vacc on my heifers... They get one shot, 4-12 months age time line.. Done for life. My heifers can get shipped anywhere in the country... but I also do it for the Tattoo in their ear. IDENTIFICATION...

Used to be dairy farmers routinely vacc for bangs... because of the transmission in raw milk.... then considered eradicated... I do not want to find out that somewhere we brought in a problem... like smallpox... stop it BEFORE . Yes they will always show positive... just have to provide that they were vacc against it and they can be taken anywhere...

Domestic bison should get bangs vacc to stop any spread... in some of the western states Bangs is still mandatory for any animal shipped over state lines..
Be smart... do them... It is not that expensive, a one time thing... You will need very strong working facilities for the bison... they do need treating on occasion... and just do the heifer calves.

One of the reason the bison aren't here yet, unlike pigs and such a slap up job of a fence doesn't work for these animals.
Kept buying land and each time before we did we were going to put fence down only to find out we would need to move it again.

The female flies lay up to 300 eggs in a wound and are attracted to something as small as a tick bite.
Oh God help us. Seriously.
And am I the only one with a tin hat this morning thinking modified ticks and NWSW in the same brainwaves?
@Baymule smart move on having the screw worm spray ahead of time. Thinking I'll be getting some as well. We're 55 from here to Mexico (Baja peninsula) - though I don't know anything about the status of NWSW in Baja.

There is nothing more temporary that permanent fence, no matter what you’re raising.

You can order screwworm spray from Premier 1, but knowing Califoolia they probably don’t allow it to be shipped there. Better stock up now.

And an off side note.... on the screw worm situation in Mexico and close proximity to TEXAS.... If you have any animals you are thinking about selling... GET THEM GONE NOW... If this nwsw does come across and cases are found, and they shut down the movement of animals in the state... Not only will your market be narrowed, but there might not be much/any movement allowed. Then you are stuck with animals that need to be sold, and if you can find buyers, the prices are going to take a big hit because of restrictions of movement. If other states close their borders to TX or any other state with a positive case, you have lost the any chance for a better price.
