We usually wait to release until they are quite awake and have then had a parting gift meal. That way they can recover a bit more loose without trying to find food. The vet gives the cats a reversal shot to bring them out of the anesthesia more quickly. "Mohawk" seemed alert in the trap when I brought him home, but when I opened the end he flew out, rolled, struggled to stand, and continued staggering and falling across the yard.
Next cat neutered gets to recover for a couple hours before I release him.
