At about 8pm last night Caleb got up, walked over to his crate, then out, looked at me. "You ready for bed, Bud?" I put his blanket down in the crate, he came over, went halfway in, stopped. He looked at me. I touched his rear, he went in all the way. I petted his back, praised him, shut the door. He kissed my fingers as I closed the latches.

Caleb goes in the crate for naps, but always puts up resistence when it's time for bed. A few weeks ago he made it clear to me that he prefers being out in the living room "day" crate at night, so at bedtime I give him his blanket there. Sometimes he sits down, halfway in, won't budge. Once inside he chews my fingers as I latch the door, a protest of sorts.

So, yes, this is big.

Caleb is such a smart boy, I just can't imagine you without him or him without you.

Yesterday I was the driver for a friend getting an endoscopy. I put Caleb in his crate when I left about 10am. He started barking immediately, but I didn't look back.

Then as my friend was recovering from the anesthesia he was told "You have a CT scheduled afterwards. Drink the stuff, wait 90 minutes, then we'll do the CT."

Texted DS about the delay, so he walked Caleb, gave him some time free in the house. Caleb just laid by the door.

After I got home he was a little and reactive to everything. Sigh. Two steps forward, one back.

But he was better today.

Went to early voting this morning, no wait. Caleb sat in the car. I drove around the building to the back parking lot where the nature trail starts, but there were a lot of noisy people milling around, and big dogs. I chose a different path.

My car is on the far left, near the trail entrance.

As we walked across the soccer fields I let Caleb range a little, 10' or so, then did recall. He did well. Then we walked along the paved path, into the woods, and picked up the nature trail, going in reverse direction instead of the usual way. Met about four dogs, lots of walkers, but missed the noisy group. Good.

Caleb gets lots of compliments for how cute/"pretty" he is. And an occasional "good boy".

Afterwards we went to Aldi's, where he waited for 10-15 minutes, and then went to the gas station.

Now he's resting...

I just watched Debbie and Caleb playing!


Debbie chased Caleb down the hall. He quickly retreated, and wiped out on the kitchen floor. She made "Stay away from me" noises, but then chased him as he ran away. And Caleb was doing the "play bow" at her.

Yay! I wonder if snuggles are in their future?

Because @Baymule requested it...here's my heart dog, Tirzah. I had her for less than 10 years, and she took part of me with her when she died.

Tirzah was beautiful. There's something about a dog with 2 tennis balls in her mouth that makes me laugh. Just so darn cute!

Lab and GSD. She was the smartest dog I've ever had.

But I think Caleb might challenge that...
