Guess, if you want to know
We were trimming my horse's hooves today and noticed that he has flaps of tough skin growing over his frog. What is this? Is this an indication of some sort of foot disease? Does my horse have thrush? Should we trim it off?

Hmm. Is he perhaps sloughing his frog? Was there a foul odor?

The frog grows and sheds, this is normal. You can trim this tissue off, it won't hurt him, just don't go too deep. Trim the flaps off. You will know thrush when you smell it....it is soft and black and stinky. Dig around with your hoofpick and if everything is dry and firm, he is fine. If your pick sinks in and there is smelly goo, get some Thrushbuster and after cleaning the hoof well, put the purple stuff in all the cracks and crevices until it clears up.

Yeah, doesn't sound like thrush. Thrush smells really bad & you will probably see some white stuff in there in the crevice too.
