Drstratton - My Backyard Journey Journal

When you put in the new shower, install grab bars everywhere. Before I had knee replacement surgery, I had a friend install grab bars on both sides of the toilet, it is in a tiny alcove like yours, and outside the shower. The shower already had one. Believe me, I sure used them!
Hubs will be adding to the framework in preparation for adding grab bars. Iknow what you're talking about, when I had my knee replacement he built supports for me next to the toilet and I sure used it. We're trying to prepare for getting older. When we built the house we put in 36" doors for all of the rooms and the hallways are extra wide. We have people in our extended family with handicaps, so we knew how important it was to have those features and wanted to make it easy for them to maneuver when they were visiting. The shower will also be able to accommodate a wheelchair if that is ever needed. It won't have a curb.

I did those "extra" things for ease of maneuvering when I built this house...wide halls, doors, grab bar preps, wheelchair shower. Another -- doorknobs. Use ones like a handle vice common, round, grab & turn. They're on all inside doors downstairs here.

Only child & sure enough, AD mom lived here almost 5 yrs. Saved a lot of concern & manipulation when it happened.

Yes, it's made things a lot easier here also.

That’s awesome. It’s very difficult here to get the wheelchair to, or in and out of the bathroom. The house is very old and very small and was designed as just a cookshack for the cowboys, not really to live in…but here we are!

Our first house was small like that. I'm sorry it's so hard for you. :hugs

A little trip down memory lane today! My husband and I cleared our land by hand. It was sand and sagebrush. We didn't have a tractor or anything with 4 wheel drive. Shovels and determination. We designed and built our house from the ground up. We are the construction team. Some pictures of our crew.
