Yeah, $3,500 is a bit of stretch isn't it? :) Makes me wonder what I could resell a nice $1,500 heifer for??

When I spoke to the person that has Jersey bottle calves for $650, she said she brings them in from Oregon because there are no breeders in this area & there is a decent market. She has someone in Oregon that gets them from the dairies and feeds them until she can go out to pick them up.
Of course, now all the dairies around here are gone!
I could have done that!

Alright - I have a lead on another bottle calf, purebred Jersey. She is two days old... Don't know the price or have any other info yet.

Ok, they have two 1/2 mini Jersey, 1/2 full size Jersey -

$650 for the two month old
$550 for the two day old

Those are interesting prospects...

The two month old isn't a bad price as that one should be weaned or about to be but, the 2 day old one sounds high.

Kitty, that's what I thought, also.

I didn't ask if they were open to offers, but they might have priced it so they could come down a little. Hard to say.

If I felt richer, I'd make an offer for the pair.

We'll see what the husband says.

It's really cheaper to buy the started heifer than the newborn if you can get them. It's just those newborns are so adorable.
If I was spending the $$, i'd go for the started calf because it is so easy for those new jersey's to die and then you are out the money.
When we had our cows calving at other dairies, we'd try to get the calves out of there before they were dry so they wouldn't pick up any germs. We'd take the colostrum with us, but at our place they were isolated and watched like a hawk the first days.
