Thursday evening... It was a very nice day, sun and breezy... 62 up to about 90 , in the sun... but mostly stayed about 88 when I looked a couple times.
Wed was a little rainy here then cloudy. Where we went to the funeral was bout 1 1/2 hrs north, and it started to rain there, and rained several good showers and we got into a real hard rain coming home... Got about 20 miles from home and it tapered off to nothing. We did get a later afternoon shower, about 4.. rained real hard for 10-15 minutes. Then some sprinkles and mostly clouds for the rest of the afternoon.
Total yesterday was .4 in the rain gauge...
In the last 8-9 days we had a total of 3 inches. It has been a life/crop/grass saver.... not enough to break the drought by any means... we are still actually in extreme drought conditions here, but it has lessened many areas from extreme to severe... and some more, especially Kentucky, back to moderate drought.
Yes, we got some good rain... we did not get the hard storms or downpours some areas got... south of here about an hour they got some extreme winds and thunderstorms and there were trees down and hard rains and damages... But for the most part, we have just had good soaking rains... Still, you dig down a foot and it is dry many places... so it is going to take some continued CONSISTENT rains like this to get our ground back to where it ought to be. And we are going into the summer and hot drier weather normally... but who knows what normal is anymore....
Today, I was in a not very productive mood... yesterday didn't help seeing the family that will carry on from losing their husband and dad.... he was 60, and almost ready to retire in another year or 2, and enjoy his life a bit... we just don't know...
My "normal allergies" are kicking in some; the itchy eyes and runny nose. So there is that added aggravation.
I got the 5 bantams moved out in the calf hutch... cleaned out their crate. Then I moved the inside chicks out into the crate for the day, but there is no light/heat out there so they are in a box in the house for the night. They can use the bigger area and the daytime temps are good for them... I cut the heat off them inside because the box is small and they were laying "away from" the light/heat.... so I cut the light and they have been fine. I will put them out for the days for a bit...
The Vorwerk eggs are ready to hatch... the first batch I set... as I did one carton and then about 5-6 days later did the 2nd batch with some NH eggs and such. I will set one more group of eggs as soon as these hatch.
I worked on the panels and got the wire stapled to the 2x2's that I added, so they can go up... probably should paint them to match... but they are going to get covered with the vinyl irregular pieces I got, so not like they are going to get exposed to the weather.
I also took the walk behind weed eater and did more around to get some of the bigger rougher areas done... I did some around the big maple out front, and want to fix it so I can plant the pink lily of the valley pips around the base and then mulch it... Decided that the soil I am dumping out of the planters would be good to dump there, add some other dirt. I need something to go around the base of the tree a few feet out, to hold the dirt there and make it better for a "bed"... There are a few daffodils that come up and it would look nicer if it had a "retaining wall" so to speak... have to look and see what I could do... guess maybe some decorative blocks, but thinking more along something like a "lawn edging" thing that would hold the dirt but then could be removed and it mulched well out to make mowing easier and not have to use a weed eater too. Oh well, still looking and thinking... The pips won't be ready to plant anytime soon...
Plus need to do something around the tree/brush stumps where the scraggly rose of sharon was... not digging them out, there is a big patch of daffodils right there also, so need to just make a garden/bed on top of the stumps so they eventually rot.
Then today, I worked on another stretch of the electric netting... until I ran the batteries down in the weed eater... the grass is thick and it really works it hard... But got another whole section out... it works pretty good to get most of the grass cut... then pulling the netting up is not so hard since there is not alot of grass holding it on either side... I go down both sides of the netting and it cuts off most of it... there's alot of dead grass from last year also. Have the long side of the garden to do... and a piece along the pines/property line... but that piece is not so thick... and I am getting a decent rhythm to getting it out... It still works on my stamina...
Tomorrow I will fill chicken feeders, stopped and got 2 buckets at the feed bin...
I am not going to make the biggest poultry pen moveable... just too much for the lightweight panels... still undecided on the other ones.
I will have to mow grass as it is "growing like weeds" after getting the rain...
There are dahlia plants coming up in most of the planters... That was fast.. but soaking the bulbs really helps.
DS brought back my "4wd" ... he replaced 4 of the studs in the wheel that I had broken and bent... the holes for the studs to come through, on the wheel, are wallowed out some... he said not from me but they have been like that... so the lug nuts will not stay tight...that is partly why I lost 4 of the 8 lug nuts long before I had the wheel break loose and fall off in Deb's yard. So he put the spare on, and he has a couple of wheels that he got from a friend, that fit it, that he is not using... so I will put the tire off the bad wheel on one of them for a spare, and then have a couple more wheels to put some heavy winter treads on for the winter weather/snow... The tires on it are okay on the road, but were not very good when we had the snow, before it became ice/snow crete... and they do not even do good on slippery mud/wet grass in the pastures. They are not mud and snow truck tread tires...
So, that is about it... made another gallon of tea today,
I made an omelet this evening... with a "fake cheese slices" and mushrooms... the "cheese " gives it some creaminess but it is just eh... still was okay in the omelet...
I miss "normal" food...
Well, eyes are really itching... time for a shower to wash everything off my face... I am sure I just aggravated it this afternoon, out there working on the netting in all that grass and dead stuff.
