Farmerjan's journal - Weather

Considering we have all the recently weaned calves in the barn lots, there are over 100 head of 4-600 lb animals there... plus about 100 cows between the ones on the hill with small fall calves, and 2 pastures of dry cows and heifers to calve in the spring... There are 30 behind me at grant's pasture..on the free flowing spring; plus the 25 at snyder's with having to chop the ice on that trough...
It was a logistical nightmare... they all got to drink some for 3 days... but now they can all drink their fill... and we have the trick to get the well pipe thawed with the hair dryer aimed down the pipe to heat the space.

Today started out at 11 degrees.... was in the upper 20's all day... recording thermometer hit 40 when the sun was on it for about half an hour... out of the wind... dropped back to 29 as soon as the sun was off it... wind was enough to keep it very cold out there...
Still have water at the barn for all the lots/pastures there.... ... thank you God... DS came up to snyders. brought the silage cart, rolled out some off a round bale for the cows, and had a big chunk he put over the fence for Peaches... also took some silage out of the cart and put in her tub's.... he forgot to take them with him to the barn when he filled the cart...

He went down and took the axe to the water trough again for the heifers to drink.... I hauled 15 gal to the cow and she was too busy eating the silage to want to drink... I think she must've drank more last night as there was only a little ice in the bottom... When I poured the hot water in, then the lukewarm 2 big buckets, it floated up and I took what little there was out . So obviously she was not desperate for water... fed her the grain and was done...
It tires me out to try to haul the water even.... this exhaustion is maddening.... and the coughing and hard to breathe.... %@#&^%**
Got another langshan egg... bless her little heart... I sure want to hatch from her... she is a good layer for a little hen.... want to perpetuate that laying gene.... Not hatching anything for at least a month though....

Have you tried using a nebulizer?

Road to left , drive up hill at Snyder's. 2nd. Turn at top of hill coming towards you. Elec fence just this side of round bale. 3rd. From round bale in towards barn. 4th, silage cart/wagon to right of plowed path in 3rd. 5th. Straight down over hill to water trough where he pulled me up with tractor. No I didn't go straight down ... Had gone out and around so was parallel to hill and slid off plowed path down at bottom of hill. 6th flat around barn, fenced pen to left. 7th. Heifers eating some hay he rolled out. 8th. Peaches eating silage in tubs DS put in pen for her, sorry I cut off jersey calf on her...black steer standing behind her. Looks nice but it was in 30s with brisk breeze.

Love seeing the places you're always telling us about. 💞

That hill is colder than a witches tit with the wind. Great views .. it's the home place, daughter married a snyder, they're near my age .. use it for summer trips to "the farm" now. 20 couple acres. 2 kids inherit (they're 40s-50s). Wish we could buy it ... I live across road kitty corner to end of property. Way to left of 1st pic.

Just the little, by comparison, of freezing weather and ice we had was a major pain to take care of the animals. I'm not set up or prepared at all for being frozen for days. I cannot fathom how you cope with it. I was exhausted by end of day with the little that I did. I hope you can thaw out soon and get some warmth coming your way.
