Anyone else like me, bought a feed pellet machine to make your own feed?
I saw this machine online that presses feed ingredients into pellets. They say it’s good for the animals, so I figured I’d give it a shot.
About two months ago, the machine finally arrived. But honestly, it’s way more complicated to use than I thought. It’s not just about making pellets, there’s a lot more to it.
Anyone else using one of these machines? I want to share some problems I ran into and how I fixed them, either by asking the seller or doing some online research.
First thing I learned — you gotta oil the machine before using it. I didn’t know that at first. I just jumped straight into making feed, and the pellets were all uneven and breaking apart. I thought the machine was broken, so I asked the seller. They told me to oil it and run some material through it to grind it, then sent me a video. After I followed it, the pellets came out way better. I’ll post the picture the seller sent me below, it explains it much better.
Another thing, the die plates. Different animals need different pellet sizes. I raise about 20 cattle and some chickens. When I bought the machine, the seller mentioned pellet sizes, but I only got a 4mm die plate. It works fine for now, but I might get a smaller one later, just to have it as a backup
There are still a few little things I’m figuring out, but I’ll update if I find more tips.
Overall, the machine’s been working pretty well. Anyone else have any farm equipment recommendations?
