Thank you for checking in. The last few days have been quite a whirlwind. The brown one died last night. Spiked a fever and went quickly - after some signs that it might turn out ok. It even stood! Her name was autumn. The other one is back with mama and almost nursing without assistance now - although we check on them frequently. We think we will name her Spring. The brown one was Autumn.
Update: Spring is growing. She favors one side of mama Summer’s udder. It’s time to start milking her out and make sure the other side doesn’t get overloaded. Confirmed today that there’s no mastitis and no fever. But Summer isn’t her perky self. Not as hungry. Drank some water. Doesn’t want to move about.
Could she just be tired? Depressed?
She has a friend who has been out at pasture for a week and a half since she kidded. We are wondering if she misses her.
The friend is a small Dexter heifer who we just can’t imagine being too up close and personal with baby Spring. So she only visited once so far under our supervision.
Thoughts on goat behavior or something I could be missing would be great.
