I was feeling tired when I got home, decided to take care of the flocks, and take it easy.

Two hours later...

Yep. I did more digging.

Why did it take two hours?

The area was full of roots!

Big roots, I needed my pruning shears.

:ep

The soil is dusty dry, it needs compost and peat moss, then I will plant irises!

Well, I overdid getting those roots out, paid for it with cramps, but today I have just been puttering.

North side of house:

Rose of Sharon (white fences) are looking fine after being transplanted a couple days ago. Can you see what I see in a few years, that whole area being screened from the road?

Last night I pulled up the second row of pea vines. Total yield for two 4' rows planted was about 4 cups of peas. Not shabby. All have been blanched and frozen.

Today I removed the trellis as the turnips and carrots don't need it...

...and put it over the second sowing of beans.

First sowing of beans has baby beans!

Second sowing of squash is going here, later today. I'll pull the volunteer tomato if it gets in the way.

Back bed is tentatively for yams. My store-bought haven't sprouted yet, was hoping they'd do that, soon.

South side of house, mostly annuals:

And I topped off one pond with overflow water from the rain barrels.

Time to finish preparing the iris bed...BBL.

Love watching you progress and seeing the vision. It's going to be fabulous when it's all grown up. I look at all that green and am envious (in a good way, as a friend with something special is a good thing) as we head into our ... brown season. All our greenery is shifting color to yellow and then brown. Water is $$$, so planting the fun stuff is at a minimum.

Thank you!

Part of this drive to get things done is because if I don't get it finished now I won't be able to once it gets hot and humid. At that point I can't do more than minimal watering and weeding. In the last couple weeks I have come to the conclusion that keeping myself busy is probably related to not having Ron around anymore.

Friday afternoon

IMG_20250509_163326243_HDR~2.jpg

Added peat moss and compost to the new iris bed, worked it in. Then I watered, and planted just as the sun went behind the trees on the west side.

Had a few smaller iris left, put them in the perennial "bird" garden, next to the bird bath.
IMG_20250509_172007245_HDR~2.jpg

Canna lilies, coreopsis, and sedum are also growing there.

Planted more squash!
IMG_20250509_182054289_HDR.jpg

Clockwise from top: Lemon, Black Beauty zucchini, Straightneck.

Feeling inspired, I started setting up the other two rainbarrels.
IMG_20250509_181307894_HDR~2.jpg

The barrel on the right is the overflow, and is set slightly lower than the main barrel. I have it fairly level, front to back and left to right.

But I need to remove this small stump before I can set up the other barrel. Or at least trim it level with the ground.

That's what I have a reciprocating saw for!
