Chicken stuff...

The second flock have been digging at the base of the back wall. It's backed by hardware cloth, but I still didn't want them to go any farther.

Two boards and a heavy log might help.

Then I made an elevated perch:

It's jammed in tight, shouldn't shift, but I zip-tied the perch to the cattle panel near the bend on the left, to be safe. When I went by later to dump yard clippings Silas was already checking it out, up on the block by the door.

First flock, all Sussex. Look at how well the shadecloth blocks the midday (hot) sun.

Those butterfly pictures are beautiful.
And the chickens are always up to some kind of mischief aren't they!
I was on a call a little bit ago & looked out the window to see mama hen outside the little 'play pen' fighting with another hen while her chicks tried desperately to get out to her. All I could do was watch & hope for the best (she ended up going back in with the chicks, so all's well)

Thank you. I only got one chance with the swallowtail, was happy it was decent. With the Monarch I probably took about 15 shots as she fluttered from leaf to leaf, laying her eggs.

Hope mama hen is okay, and the chicks, too.

Beans are still producing, but I have noticed they seem to be slowing a little. The second sowing is now putting forth blossoms, so hopefully the bean bounty will continue. I've frozen over a dozen bags, about 25 beans to a bag.

I shelled the last of the peas, and froze two more bags.

And I picked my first squash of the season!

I had a brief thought to freeze it, but...naw. I sliced and cooked it, added butter after draining it.
😋
I ate a bowlful and put the rest away in the refrigerator, next to the last of the turnip greens.

While I was out running errands earlier today I saw that Aldi's had strawberries. I bought two boxes for a specific reason...I'm going to make strawberry-rhubarb pie! I'd bought just over a pound of rhubarb stalks at the farmers' market last Saturday, and it was still good. I cut up both rhubarb and strawberries, then sprinkled a flour & sugar mixture over it. I covered it and placed it in the refrigerator, will bake the pies tomorrow. One pie will go in the freezer, will take it with me when I go see my granddaughters next month.

Whew.

Oh, and the pickerel rush are blooming, too.

Meanwhile, here....my started beans got planted and are a whopping 6" high, while the zuc plant is about 8" long. Big difference in climates for sure!!
I used to live in the hills of northeastern Connecticut, so I know and sympathise. Last frost date was the end of May.

I've been complaining about none of my hens going broody.

In three weeks I have a trip to Kentucky planned, annual visit with the granddaughters.

Priscilla appears to be going broody...
