Naomi is still on the eggs.


I am planning on moving the dog crate brooder into the coop tomorrow or Friday. The hatch will probably start Sunday or Monday, so I want to move her and her nest into it at night, possibly Saturday. Food and water will be provided, and any chicks that hatch will be safe from everything, but their broody mom.


On the return trip from Kentucky I stopped at a statuary place in Virginia, east of Marion. Owner was a Christian, we had a nice chat. I bought this trio, am planning on painting them to match the Speckled Sussex.

Maybe I should paint one chick yellow and one chipmunk?

While I was away there was RAIN...

I had to bail my cart, couldn't tip it, too heavy!

Ditch was FULL of water, look at the debris left behind, THAT'S how high it got.

Lost some cedar limbs.

The squash are dying due to borers.

Egg hatch day is probably Monday, that would be 21 days.


Yesterday I decided to just pull out the brooder. "Just"...

It needed some tightening, gaps covered. I worked on it despite the heat.

All set up.

I need to get out the chick waterer and feeder later today, much later as it's brutal with the humidity. outside.

Poor chickens.

I put a black rubber bowl in each coop, added 1-2 cups of water, and ice cubes. By the time the chickens decide to investigate the tubs the cubes will have melted, but the water should still be cool

Earlier today Naomi was taking a good dust bath. The soil is probably cooler under the straw, and damp. I checked on the flocks about 6, offered a few BOSS, which were enthusiastically accepted.
