Rahab has successfully raised two broods of her own, this is Hannah's first hatch.

Both are 3 years old. Rahab's my friend, too, comes up and talks to me, asks for treats.

Too bad, but one beats none.

I checked the coop at dusk. Lois was in a nesting box with her three chicks. Hannah and chick were settled into the back of the brooder, door open. Good.

This morning I heard chaos as I approached the coop. Hannah was floofing and screeching at the other hens when they pecked at her chick. Even Zaccheus pecked at it, and Hannah went ballistic.

Then another hen calmly walked up next to Hannah, and started eating. It was Rahab, the only other chicken remaining from the original day old chicks, Hannah's own hatchmate. She remained next to Hannah, protecting her and the chick.

I don't think it was a fluke, but a kind act.
