Hi, I have goats and now have adopted 1 sheep. She appears to have hair not wool. She got super poofy so I trimmed her using hand trimmers but not a great job. When I google electric cutters for sheep they all seem to be for wool. Does it matter? Can I use the wool ones or do I need something different. I think she looks fine, but my poor girl just looks at me like, "really dad?" so I thought I would get trimmers to do a better job. haha.

You can get blades for wool....needed to do the job. They're wider & different teeth. Also need a well powered clipper unit.

Give us a picture and we can help you decide type sheep you have 🙂. Yes hair would be better but they're a cross & usually have a thick mohawk on backs. Don't cut too close, sunburn can happen. Several sheepies on here, they'll chime in to help ya 😁

I have Katahdin hair sheep. I have some Dorper and Katahdin crosses also and Dorpers carry a thatch of wool. It is a desirable trait in Dorpers, but not Katahdins. When the wooly ones get too matted up, I put them in a chute, halter and tie them up and I use hand shears to clean them up.

For one or a few sheep, I wouldn't worry about the electric shears. They require maintenance and the blades must be sent off for sharpening.

How old is she? Sometimes a young sheep won't shed out the baby fuzz. It might take the second season to shed. Just my opinion that one sheep is not worth buying shears for, get the hand shears and slowly clip the wool off and little snip at a time.

I agree with @Mini Horses - nothing I would clip off. I do have a hair-wool cross wether right now who started having dreadlocks (wooly mammoth-ish) -- I could have used the shears or clippers but when I went to pull one of the dreads off I just kept going. Stuck a panel up so he'd stay put and plucked away. He actually enjoyed it. LOL probably was like a huge massage for him. Only have a his neck to go to finish. I do have other hair/wool crosses that I have used the shears on.

PS -- cute sheep!
