You only just got her... It's been 2 weeks... I'm sure she's a bit traumatized. Give her some time and be patient with her. Take into account also that she's probably in heat, and you've been holding her upside down to take pictures... It's been my (limited) experience that when females are "in heat" they can be a little, ummm shall we say, GRUMPY! :duc:hide I've never held a female in heat upside down and taken pictures, so I can't really comment about that... ;)

Talk in a calm clear voice to her, give her treats, move slow and deliberate, nothing fast and scary to her. Get her some distracting toys. Give her some time.

It will take time. If she was not a pet at her old home she likely didnt have a lot of human contact in petting/cuddling/etc form. Our mini boar was never a pet and at over 2yrs old he will never be a pet, the time has past for that.

Your female may never be super friendly but she might eventually tolerate getting pets, treats help a lot with pigs.

Some pigs just don't get along. We had a sow that refused to have anything to do with a specific boar, even when in heat.

Greetings and welcome to BYH Willow! So glad you joined us. Please consider taking a minute to visit the new member's thread and introduce yourself so folks can welcome you properly. https://www.backyardherds.com/forums/new-member-introductions.17/

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Traditionally, female pigs will become submissive when in fact in heat. She will just stand there and not budge and brace for impact. I raise full size heritage pigs. It takes a bulldozer to move them if they are in heat.

Remember and mark your calendar for particular dates.
  • Every 21 days the cycle. If you witness the "in heat" cycle, write it down. If don't wish to mate her at that time, remove the boar. until the cycle ends.
  • If you witness them mating. MARK IT DOWN. Almost like clock work and on the money.. 3 months/3 weeks/3 days until the drop those piglets. I have had several drop them right on the money, even though that is just a rule of thumb.
I glad you hooked up with this site. I wish you the best with your new adventure.

She will remain in heat for several days but standing heat will only usually last 12-24hrs. Don't worry to much the pigs know what is going on and assuming she is nearly the same size or bigger then the boar she would let him know for sure she is not interested.
