I have finally convinced my husband to leave the suburbs and move out to the country! We should be in the new house in 60 days or less! Up until now, we have raised backyard meat rabbits, we had a few chickens and ducks, but got rid of them when it was time to get the house ready to sell (since we live with an HOA that doesn’t allow those kinds of animals... I am looking forward to learning lots from this site!

Welcome and happy Easter!! You will lov3 it here...everyone is sooo helpful...and you will learn a ton. I found this place...not long ago...and it has been my saving grace on the farm!! So, what kind of animals do you plan to have? It helps if you go back into your account pag3 and list the area you are from..that helps the rest of us to understand the climate you are dealing with!

Welcome from Texas! Glad you found us and joined the fun. You came to the right place to learn about farm animals, I was a member here for 5 years before we moved 5 years ago and I was finally able to have my sheep. I studied everything I could. My advice is for you to pick an animal you are interested in, then pick a topic and read the back posts. There is tons of information in the posts. Read all you can. I waivered between sheep and goats, studied both to death and settled on sheep. Then I studied breeds and chose hair sheep over wool sheep because I didn't want to shear wool. I love my sheep! Ask questions as you go along, we will be happy to help you.

Where are you moving to and how many acres are you buying? We are on 8 acres and have sheep, chickens, 4 horses, 2 feeder pigs (until August) and currently have 43 Cornish Cross meat chickens (until the first of May). We also have 2 Great Pyrenees and 1 Anatolian/Great Pyrenees livestock guard dogs (LGD) and 1 big black Labrador/Great Dane cross who makes a pretty good farm dog.

Thank You! I will do that! I am planning goats, chickens, pigs, ducks, rabbits, and eventually sheep and a few alpaca! There is a family at our local farm who being alpaca to the fair where my kids and I volunteer every year, and I LOVE them!

We are moving onto 4 acres. Right now my research is centered around making our farm self sustaining. I want to be able to have a small plot for hay, a garden, chickens, ducks, milk goats, meat rabbits, and eventually sheep and alpaca. We are right beside my niece who has a horse farm. So if we want horses we can trade labor with her for space. We already have two milk goats that are staying on a friends farm while we sell our house and get a place for them on the property!
