I posted about trading turkeys for goats.6 hens and 2 toms for a doe and a buck.I got pictures of the papers today. It is a 300 mile round trip to get these youngens but I just can't pass up this deal. We're gonna try to go get them Sunday. The doe was disbudded but the buck was not.Doesn't matter to me,might later but not right now.I went to the ADGA and found the pedigrees but I don't know how to figure out if there are good bloodlines or good milkers or anything. The does' papers haven't been filed yet but her sire is Deer Ridge Farms Dion #N1471614 and her Dam is 4D's Bailey Bunkin #AN1350443.The buck is already registered and his name is Sahara Hills Joey #AN1549143.They are such pretty goats.I just fell in love when I saw their pictures.I hope I don't get took on this deal.I can always raise more turkeys(I'm keeping 2 hens and 2 toms)but I could never afford to pay cash for such nice goats. What do you good folks think?

I am no expert of any kind, but they sure look pretty nice to me. They are both nice long goats, maybe a bit on the thin side, but Nubians can have that look sometimes. I am sure the more experienced Nubian folks will add more, so we can just use this to say congrats on what I would think is a good deal and also to bump up the post so others answer.

They look really nice to me! I have nubians, and yes they do tend to look thin but that doe looks a little too thin right now. One of my nubian does looked like that when I got her but she fattened up quickly. Just make sure it's not worms that is causing her to look thin. Ask if they have been wormed lately and maybe get a fecal done?? You could also worm them yourself if u decide to buy them... But I would definately not pass up this offer! They are cuties!

They're beatiful! Love the does looong ears, once she puts on a little weight she'll look awesome! Love her coloring. Theres a nubian doe at the farm I work on with that color, and when you shave her she almost looks black. Maybe yours will do that? I think theres a website where you can look up pedigrees. If I find it I'll post the link here

8 turkeys for 2 registered dairy goats? in our area that would be one of those if it sounds too good to be true it probally is deals. Turkeys here at grown size are average 20 dollars each and registered dairy goats are 250 to 400 each so it sounds like a great deal to me even with the road trip.

Ok, just have to ask first, what are your plans for these guys? Pets? Home milkers? Show?

American Nubians (vs Purebred), in general, don't milk as large of an amount and don't sell for nearly as much. That being said, the doe's sire has nice bloodlines...Lakeshore and Kastdemur are in the top for production, etc. Never heard of her dam's bloodlines though, so not sure about that one. The buck has some Lakeshore way back, but not familiar with the others in his line. Also, they are half siblings (same sire), so you wouldn't be able to breed them together (or at least it wouldn't be recommended).

So I guess my piont is it depends on what you want them for.

I'm gonna say, that is a really nice deal, even for just the doe. As Kelly M said, it would be some pretty thick inbreeding to breed those two together. It isn't unheard of, but unless you are really culling/breeding for specific things, it probably isn't something you want to do. You can always resell him if you want to.

Ped wise, I like their sire's lines. Lakeshore is wonderful. Here you can see their sire's full sister who is REALLY nice looking http://www.fancycolorsnubians.com/Dixie.html

Sahara Hills actually has a website... I don't know if you went to look at it.
Can't help you with the bloodlines other than 4D's rings a bell. Here is the doe's dam... looks pretty nice in that picture http://www.saharahills.com/bunkin.html

I don't see the buck's dam up there, but I would say that it probably isn't bad at all, since nearly all of Saraha Hill's does are from 4D and they all look good to me. I mean you can nit-pick anything, but overall from a quick glance they look really nice.

Thanks, everyone for the help ang tips and links. We are going to get them Sunday. My turkeys are 2 year old heritage bronzes.I usually get $100 for a trio.$40 for a laying hen.$3 for a fertile hatching egg.It figures out fairly close but I do think the goats are probably worth alittle more.Or at least they will be if I can her to milking and use him for a sire.I ran an ad and he called me wanting to trade and hes good with it.I will be keeping them for pets and milking by hand when the time comes.I didn't realize they were half brother and sister.I don't like that but I can also add to my tiny herd, maybe a pygmy buck for her and some boer for him????Haven't really got that far yet. This is one problem that I just realized...they were raised together since babies and fellow said buck was "bucky".She was born March 2010 and he was born April 2010.I would think there was a chance she got bred around Oct-Nov 2010.I sure hope not, thats only 7-8 months old.I beleive that would be too young.I won't know for sure till I get them home.I wonder what the problems with the possible baby could be?Could it be deformed?Should I have her checked and terminate if preg?If it turned out to be OK could it be registered?Wow...I didn't know what I didn't know.I'm going to jump in with both feet anyway.I want these goats.I have the means to take care of them babies or not.I've owned goats on and off since I was 10 years old.Had some really goods ones and had some bad luck and lack of know how, too.I'm older now, have the funds to have proper care and have people here to help guide me.I also have learned from mistakes and learned what to watch for and how to deal with it.I'm hoping this will be a wonderful experience with real super nice goats I can be proud of.Sorry for all the questions...answer if you can and ask more if you need too. Thanks so much.:love
