Can I register a buck I don't own anymore?

(I told you it was a stupid question.. :p )

We bred unregistered stock to a purebred buck who was registerable, but unregistered. We actually had the paperwork to register him, but never sent it in. Didn't see the point, given the does weren't registered.

Well, I'm sorta regretting the decision now.

Then it occurs to me...regardless of where he is or who owns him now...or even if he's still alive, for that matter...the buck was born to purebred parents. That's basically all that should matter, so far as a pedigree/registration is concerned.. I'm about 95% sure he's still unregistered at this point, though we sent the paperwork along with him when we sold him. I could probably even call the buyer up and say...hey...that buck...did you ever register him?

And I know I could call his original breeders and get his pedigree info again..

He was born in like December of '07...if I have all the pedigree information handy, could he still be registered?

I think it is going to depend on the registering association too...I think the USBGA would frown on it...What breed are we talking here?

Yup, if the new owners register him ;) maybe they'll let you pay for it.
Um..

So, is that an actual yes, or a no, disguised as a yes?

What I'm asking is...if the buck remains unregistered, can I submit a registration application and get him registered, despite the fact that I no longer own him?

So only the current owner of an animal can register the animal.

Is that what I'm reading?

If so, is that on the application or in the rulebooks somewhere?

I just sent in papers for my doe who'd never been registered by her previous owner. The owner tried to register her, but she didn't own the buck at the time of breeding, so she got an ERROR REPORT (yes, they type it in all caps LOL) from ADGA saying she needed to resubmit the application along with a breeding certificate from the buck's owner saying that he did indeed breed her doe, resulting in my doe.

When I bought June, I got the ERROR REPORT and the breeding slip. I procrastinated and just mailed it in to ADGA. I paid the registration and transfer fees though. It wasn't too much, so I didn't mind.

So, I'd guess you could register the buck as long as you paid the registration fee and the transfer (to you) fee. :idunno

Make sense? No? :idunno

It should be the current owner who registers the animal, except when kids are sold w/ reg. apps that are also marked 'transfer'.
(Yes, that's in the rules and on the app.)

The people you bought him from would have to sign a reg. application and mark it as a transfer.... so they'd have to send you another signed reg. app before you could send it in and have him registered as yours.

(You couldn't just send it in w/ his pedigree filled out, is my point...they have to attest that they bred him and that they owned his parentals.)

And you'd have to 'lie' and sign it as 'current owner / applicant'.

If it was me, I'd see if his new owners sent in the application and go from there...but if they did....

Then they'd have to give you back-dated service memos saying you used him on such and such dates and then you'd have to fill out reg. apps on your doelings (can't register % boys w/ ADGA) and send the reg. apps in w/ service memos.

Much easier to just keep paperwork utd and register them as you go...This too, I learned the hard way.

Two scenarios we've been through that taught me, "No papers in hand, don't take the goat."
1-
I bought our first buckling and brought him home, the breeder was supposed to send me the reg. app. later on....I trusted her....We had a disagreement a few weeks later over another issue and she more or less told me "Have fun w/ that unregistered buck"....
I contacted ADGA and they told me w/ out the signed app, there was nothing they could do.
I waited for a bit, emailed the breeder, offered an extra 50$ and acknowledged - fine, she *won*, but I needed that goat registered....PLEASE....(as much as it hurt my pride to do it)....she sent me the reg. app, and everything worked out in the end.
2-
We bought 2 bred does last year from a lady named Debra. Does were bred to a lady named Crystal's buck...they *were* friends...
Crystal never bothered to transfer the buck to her name....according to ADGA, the goat still belonged to / was registered to his breeder / first owner.
Debra and Crystal have a falling out around the time we buy the goats and Crystal refuses to get the transfer done or give us service memos....
Debra emails the buck's breeder / owner on file and she kindly sent us service memos, so we were able to register the kids out of the 2 does....that was 'legal' as far as ADGA was concerned b/c the buck was still hers in their database.
